  1. I see GM has fixed this ongoing problem for '15 .... by making it default to 4x4 in the event of a failure. Should be bringing in extra income for GM on front differentials and CV axles .... Brilliant ...
  2. LOL!! They don't tell you .... the new ones are even WORSE. I couldn't be a GM salesman, and get a full night's sleep ....
  3. It's one of two things: Either GM is using inferior steel, or, local governments are using highly corrosive agents in construction zones to combat dust (this I know to be true up here, in addition to road salt). After just 2 years of owning my '07, I was blown away at the amount of rust. I had backed into a tiny sapling at less than walking speed, and the entire bed crumpled like a tin can, all the way up over the axle. Had to go on a frame machine to be straightened! I found all the rust disassembling the bumper ... That said, it's probably a combination of those 2 aforementioned things ... Our Forefathers are rolling in their graves ..
  4. My '07 had the best tires I'd ever seen on a OEM. Bridgestone Duellers. Got 33k miles out of them - a personal record. Too bad the rest of the truck wasn't as good .. I'm not surprised at the 50k figure. Look at what we have for a congress .....
  5. Exactly why I'll never buy another new vehicle ever again. For the same money (most likely less) I can buy a complete frame-off restored truck or car (or both) from the 60's or early 70's that will more than likely last the rest of my life. Not only that, but you can actually fix the damn thing without a 24" thick manual ... I just finally replaced the switch on my '07 a couple days ago. Had the dealer look at it under warranty way back - no clue, couldn't fix. At least the parts are out there now. Cost me less than $21 shipped to my door.
  6. Unreal .... I've had this intermittent problem with my '07 since it rolled off the showroom floor ... and they STILL haven't found a fix on '14-'15 models yet??? WOW ....
  7. That's how they keep their shareholders happy ... forced-repeat customers!
  8. Just remembered having an '85 or so 6.2 diesel K30 dump body here with that same issue. If you hit a bump at around 20-30 mph, the wheel would go into a violent side-to-side wobble that wouldn't go away unless you nearly stopped. That started after we replaced that 5' long tie rod - all correct parts, installed to the same length as what was removed. I added 10 psi to both fronts, and the problem mysteriously went away! That was a strange one .... Truck was a rotted out POS, so throwing money at it was not an option. Probably in the junkyard now - this was 2-3 years back. I don't miss working on that turd, I can tell ya that!
  9. I hear you there - same here in MA. Didn't think there was a caster adjustment on our trucks - only camber .... but what do I know ... Camber, looking at the front, is whether the top of the wheel is angled outward, or inward. Here's some pics of alignment terms to help you - click on the pics in the middle: http://www.google.com/search?q=caster+camber+toe
  10. Just because there's no rust doesn't mean it's a new truck. The good part is, at least you'll be able to replace what needs to be replaced without a cutting torch, air chisel, & BFH. Any way you slice it, your still ahead of a payment on a '14 or '15 by a LONG shot. With all the money you save over a monthly payment, you can MAKE that truck brand new with some patience & a will to make it happen. EVERYTHING in that front end is suspect - I would check everything, and replace anything your not sure of. It needs to be CHECKED physically - not just by looking at it. Jack it up by the suspension, get a prybar, and pry up and down on the wheel to check the ball joints. Have a helper try to force the wheel in and out at 3 & 9 o'clock positions while you watch the steering linkage and rod ends. Try to force the wheel diagonally to check bearings. It all needs a thorough checking.
  11. Ahhh ok, that clears up most of the mileage doubts I had. The computer must be capable of dialing in the timing over a wide range.
  12. So the '14's have super-high compression? Then how do they burn 87 without detonating to pieces? I'm curious as to the difference in compression ratio between my '07 and the new ones.
  13. We have E85 here on the Mass Pike (Rt.90) - while it's 15 or so cents per gallon cheaper, the loss of mileage from it makes it more expensive than regular gasoline. Why people even buy it there I'll never understand ... but judging from the counter on the pump, which has been there for more than 2 years, the number is miniscule.
  14. That probably explains why the fuel in MA sucks so bad - it's ALL E10 (CLAIMED) ... in actuality it's E whatever the F they feel like adding. I've seen it as high as 22%!! There is NO ethanol free fuel in MA ... except diesel. I get 15-16 mpg consistently whether driving around a city or on the highway through the country. Last September the wife and I loaded up my '84 XL350R and headed to CA. Mileage didn't change until I filled up in OH - instant 3mpg gain. Driving across NV at 94 mph I averaged 18.1 mpg!! I never see those numbers in MA. That was also accompanied by a significant seat-of-the-pants change in acceleration & ability to pass. Elevation might have played a part in that out west, but OH isn't high, & I still saw an increase. Last road trip down south to SC hauling a trailer, I was getting better mileage at 20 mph higher speeds than in the northeast. I wish I had brought my scan tool with me to see the alcohol content compared to MA. I'd bet there was none. I couldn't even feel my 2k lb. trailer back there. In MA on our fuel, it's noticable. My truck is Flex too.
  15. Yeah tell me about it. That's why I live in the country, away from all those moonbat progressives in and around Boston. But, your wrong - I don't go to NH. Too many Massholes have taken the place over.
  16. It's because people here don't know any better. If you enjoy losing 3mpg and therefore paying MORE at the pump in fuel taxes, well ... then I just can't understand what planet your conscience resides on. People have NOT been using it since the 70's. Maybe in IA, but not in MA. Back then it was called GASOHOL ... and we had a CHOICE of whether or not to buy it. Most in MA didn't, because your HP/mileage degraded, and it caused all kinds of carburetor leaks, blown fuel lines, & rusty fuel tanks. Today in MA, there is NO CHOICE, and there is NO REGULATION OR TESTING of the actual percentage of ethanol added to each batch of gasoline. Sometimes you get 20% ... sometimes you get 12%. We're gettting ripped off!! Your buying diluted gasoline at full price, getting less MPG, less power, and less money in your wallet ... as usual. Your from IA, so I gather this keeps you and/or your neighbor's employed - I get it ....... but ethanol DOES NOT belong in fuel, ESPECIALLY when we're NOT given a choice!!! This used to be the "Land of the Free" ... REMEMBER??
  17. Yeah ... the pump SAYS E10 ... but have you ever looked at a Flex vehicle on a scan tool? Closer to 20% .... Nobody seems to complain about that up here. Everyone is asleep!!
  18. Certainly won't get that here in MA with our diluted moonshine they call .. "gasoline" ..................
  19. Yeah, don't even get me started on EPA diesels! What a GD mess .... I have to admit - I love my 5.3, except for it's gutless low-end. I just dread the day all the electronic gizmos start failing .... If GM gets this 8-speed right on the first try, I'll be shocked. Smart to wait a few years. If they start grenading, the internet will be abuzz ....
  20. I'd rather pay a little more in fuel than ALOT more in purchase price, taxes and insurance ... all to have it be worthless in one model year, & break down anyway. At least you can fix the older ones without a $2,000 Star Trek-looking device ....
  21. Same idea with the Ecoboost. Engineers can't fight the laws of physics no matter how many fancy promotions the marketing team comes up with. Smaller engine is gonna need help (turboS .... TWO of them ...) to make big numbers. Can't wait to see what happens to those engines after 200k miles of hard work ... I get annoyed by ONE downshift. Imagine the thing kicking down 4 gears at once just to keep a tiny engine in the powerband .... The old addage still rings true this very day: THERE'S NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISLPACEMENT. I made that decision with my '07 ....
  22. Are you serious??? Maybe if you commute to work exclusively in a pickup ...
  23. MUCH smaller and lighter is an understatement! Comparing a semi diff to a pickup diff is like comparing quarter mile times between a Prius and a MODIFIED Z06 Vette! There IS no comparison. If there was, we'd all starve to death as our food rotted in semi trailers broken down along every highway in North America ...
  24. My truck did this for a while at one point, and then cleared up. Was right around the time I had a gallon or so of bad gas I needed to get rid of out of a few mowers & weedwackers .. so I threw it in the tank. Probably had some ethanol-separation going on, & sucked that crap up. After driving it a few times, the problem went away on it's own.
  25. And if they can't meet those goals ...... fines from the EPA? Nothing good will come from the government mandating what vehicles "SHOULD" get for mileage. That sort of thing will make today's reliability issues seem like a walk in the park compared to what will come ... I'll believe a 30 mpg F-150 when I see it. How? Plastic frame? 1/2 quart of oil in the engine? 35 horsepower/ 50 ft. lbs. of torque? 22 speed transmission? Nothing good .....
