What Is A Good / Inexpensive Tire?

im looking to buy new tires since mine have worn out... i want to do 285s or even 295s cause i plan on doing a 2" body lift down the road as well or a 2/3" suspension. I have a leveling kit and a add-a-leaf so i can fit a bigger tire right now but it may rub a little bit until i raise it up a little more.. I want to get them in the next couple months and i absolutely need them before winter..

 

A 285/75/16 is 32.8"

A 295/75/16 is 33.4"

 

I am looking for a street tire that looks somewhat aggressive i don't go off road at ALL but i do drive my truck through Wisconsin winters so it needs to be good on ice and snow too.

 

Im only 18 and don't have a ton of cash to throw around but i am aware that tires are expensive but i am looking for suggestion and opinions as well

Dan, your right on track... General AT2 Grappers... great tire and cheap price. Similar look to the BFG's but with a warranty.

I have had good luck with Kumho Korean made tires - but those were passenger car tires. Still, they seem to be good tires and quite cheap too.

my vote is for TOYO Open Country

AT s will give good all round summer and winter performance

HT s are likely quieter and maybe last longer on highway, but not as good on snow or ice.

 

I have had my Load Range D 8-ply AT's on for 13 months now (6 months of that there was snow on the roads) and I have been very happy with them

 

.. the TOYO's are not the cheapest. ... but not the most expensive either....

.. generally speaking, you get what you pay for in tires

 

.. any really cheap tires I have purchased have not lasted very long

I plan on getting the General Grabber AT2s also. They seem to be getting good reviews, and have some very good ratings for the snow.

Take a brouse thru the TireRack.com site. I think the General tires are sold by them. There are others as well.

 

I like the Firestones as I've had very good luck with several sets of them on my 99 truck.

 

No offense to Pete, but I bought a set of Kumho tires for my 99 truck several yrs ago and I thought they were unsafe on my truck. The truck wandered and wallowed all over. The steering lag was something to experience and fear. Above about 45 mph the truck was unsafe in my opinion. TireRack took them back when I bitched the problem, but it cost me about a $100 or more in handling charges. I'd personnally steer well clear of Kumho tires.

 

A friend has Cooper tires and likes them. They may be a bit harder to find.

 

Your local WalMart has some good prices on tires as well. I saw some Goodyear truck tires in their the other day.

 

I believe Costco sells B.F. Goodrich as well as Michelin.

 

Sam's Club sells Michelin and probably more.

 

My advice is to stay on the beaten path of tire makers. The major makes with good reputations will keep you out of trouble.

Pros: Great Ride in all conditions, Wet/Dry/Snow/Sand/Mud. Tough 33x12.50 Stance for less than $400.

Cons: First set lasted 15 years, I would be disappointed if these didn't last that long.

It is not the cost but how long they last and the ride. I use Michelin LTX M/S...I get well over a 100,000 miles, good ride and I drive off road (pastures/thorns etc) and never had a flat...what ever tire you get, get it trued and high speed spun on your car...this greatly increases the milage and what a nice ride..

      This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.

      2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.

      Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉

      Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
