Abs Problem Real Pain!

Hello,

Thanks for reading my post.

Hopefully one of you guys can give me some advice.

I have a 2001 Tahoe 4x4 5.3

since I have owned it I have had this ABS problem.

The ABS comes on when you are stopping and are below 10mph.

i am aware of the recall.

The truck had the recall done in 2005, but they did not replace the sensors.

Since then, I took it apart and actually replaced the sensors with new GM replacements.

There was no corrosion in there, and I did treat the area just like the recall says.

This made no difference.

I then found a guy on ebay who "rebuilds" the modules.

He swears that the problem I have is actually in the module.

i sent him the module.

He rebuilt it.

I reinstalled it, and this made no difference.

i removed it and sent it back to him.

He checked it out, and said it is OK.

he sent it back to me.

I reinstalled it.

Made no difference.

I then replaced the rear ABS sensor because I was out of ideas.

This made no difference.

Now I simply have the fuse pulled and have given up.

The ABS does not trigger codes.

Please help!

What is the peak to peak voltage supposed to be?

Please note that when I replaced the sensors in the front I acutally used sand paper.

i made sure I had a good mounting surface.

You're best to have the codes read with a Tech II scanner. They can do this at a GM dealer. Then you will know what needs fixing.

 

The list of codes and detailed troubleshooting instructions would be in a GM factory service manual set which you can order from helminc.com or a GM dealer.

Normally I would agree with you, however, I had the truck put on a tech II and it does not trip any codes.

It "thinks" it is working ok.

I now have bigger tires.

It came with 245/70R16

The problem started when I had those original tires on it.

Since about last year I have bigger 265/75LT16 on.

But, there was no "change" when I changed tire sizes.

I am going to pull the wheel sensors out again today.

I will check everything out, and maybe file down a little farther.

So far as I know, you need to set the computers in the vehicle to new tire sizes when changing them.

 

Now let's see... The ABS uses one signal for both rear tires from the transmission (VSS) I think, and then the two speed sensors on the two front wheels.

 

And this is all set in the computers.

 

So the question is, if you change the tire sizes, will the computer still see the rear wheels as going the same speed as the front wheels? (Too early in the morning to think about this!)

I had same problem and had to file clean the mounting area for the sensor.This will fix problem.You can check sensor with voltmeter set to ac volts.Unplug sensor connector and spin wheel by hand.Should get reading of .300 or higher.

Problem SOLVED!

I first put a sensor tester on the sensors before I pulled them.

They read OK when I spun the wheel fast, but had no reading when turning slowly.

I pulled the wheel sensors today, and they appeared OK.

I cleaned the surfaces, and filed them down.

I reinstalled them, and had the same result.

I then "pushed" on the sensor. It definately moved in and out of the hole just a little. maybe .005.

When I pushed on it the sensor tested considerably better.

I filed them down 3 more times, but never was happy with the results.

THEN IT DAWNED ON ME!

I went down to the auto parts store, and bought 2 new hubs.

$300 later and about 1 hour worth of work, it's perfect!

Just for fun io put the sensor tester on the new hubs, and it's night and day.

The ABS NEVER felt so good.

It's like driving a brand new truck!

I have 206,000 so new hubs wasn't a complete waste of money.

I also put front brakes on (a little early) and did an oil change with Mobil 1.

Now, I'm not mad at my truck anymore!

It took me 60,000 miles to figure this out!

My advice is to not screw with it.

If your having trouble, just spring for the new hubs.

As a professional mechanic I can tell you "Time is money"

It's not worth doing the job 3 times.
