Starter Electrical Problems

Got my new/rebuilt engine runnng this weekend and have an Issue. While driving for the first time, the engine died and when I went to restart it I got nothing from the starter. Got juice every where else but not the starter. After a number of hours today I noticed that the Gear Selector light was not working in the dash, but when I jumped the two starting plugs in the Starter Relay socket, the Gear Selector light came on and the starter would now turn the engine over.

So, what does the Gear Selector light have to do with the starting system? I am totally stumped.

The gear indicator is controlled by the range switch on the transmission. The range switch controls your reverse lights and serves as Park/Neutral safety switch.

Thanks, that gets me closer. So wire goes from ignition to NSS the to Start Relay and Gear Selector light. Makes sense now. So when I jump the wires in the Starter Relay socket what would light the Gear Selector light if the Small Purple/Wht wire from the NSS is out of the equation? If I am having a intermittent problem most likely it's the NSS which happens to be soaked in oil from my last motor.
