i got a 2006 crew cab Z71 with 5.3. I noticed this morn when i got to work a noise comming from front of engine. Its not a knock but more like a tap. It stays even with engine warm but seems like it goes away some when engine is rev up. It sounds like its comming from one of the front two cyl. Is there any idea on what it could be. I was thinking maybe lifter. if so how can i check it

It could very possibly be something on your belt assembly like an alternator or something. If it starts making the noise again they have stethoscopes, like doctors use on checking your lungs and heart beat, that have a metal rod attached to the end of it. Not sure what the exact terminology is for the tool but they have them at most parts stores. Those are especially helpful in finding noises because the vibration from the noise will go up the rod and you can easily hear where the noise is coming from by moving the rod around till you find it. Besides its probably cheaper for the tool than it would be to buy new valve cover gaskets. And you would still have to take up a bunch of your time to possibly not fix the problem. Plus youll have the tool if anything else starts making hard to find noises. Ive done the same process many of times with metal tubing. It all works just the same, it just isolates the noise from the rest of the noises in the motor compartment.

Well i pulled the belt off and started for a sec when if was doing it and noise didnt stop so that was not prob. Im starting to think it was bad gas cause it used almost a half tank to run 40 miles till the light was on again. I put 93 oct in when i filled it back up and been almost 100 miles and not even used a 1/4 tank. The knocking or what ever you want to call the hollow sound got less as tank got closer to empty. But im still going to keep a eye on things cause its hard to beleive gas can make a hollow tapping sound but i may be wrong.
