Bushings Smashed..?

When I got my oiled changed a yr back the tech told me that my bushings were smashed on my suspension, i really didnt think much of it and forgot about it, but now i remeber him say that an was wondering what exactly he ment..??

what are the bushings for exactly.. my truck is lowered so i think thats why they are smahed becuz when i go over bumps theres not much cushioning or what ever to absorb the shock.. and the bushings take the full blow..

 

anyone know any other info on what the bushings are for, how to maintain them, how much in general it would cost to get repaired ect..??
