Oem Tires - Life Expectancy?

I was just a little curious what the OEM tires life expectancy was? I have a little less than 24k miles on my factory tires and the picture attached is what my right front tire looks like! I will say they are the cheapy General Ameritrac tires that probably won't make it to 25-30K miles.... I've always used Dunlop or Kumho tires and been very happy with them.

Another question? I have 245/70/17 and was wondering if I would have any issues putting on some 265/70/17 AT's? Truck is a 2wd and I have a 2" lift kit that I haven't installed yet, was waiting on the tires to need an upgrade before I put it on.

yeah i'm kinda wondering the samething. Hows the traction on taking off from a stop when it's wet out. I actually like the tires ride wise, but for traction / wet/ snow,, they are a disaster. i'M NOT a big fan of AT'S either, due to their issues in hydroplaining, or at least in my experience in the past. I'm probably going to put Michellens or BFG long trails tires, ,, both are great tread life from the past few trucks.

So, can anyone explain that long cut/gash in my tire, in the pic?

From the look of the rest of the tire, it seems to indicate you really worked that tire hard. Was this tire on a rear position? It looks like the tread is chipped out. Could this "cut" be from being spun/braking skidded on a sharp rock or such? If it hasn't seen any off-road use, I'd say the tire is defective.

I know some roads on a ranch that the owner says will eat tires every 10,000 miles. Very sharp crushed rock topped dirt roads.

I bought my truck used with about 23,000 miles and it had the Goodyear Wrangler ST's. The first thing I had to do is replace the tires, all 4 looked very similar to your picture including the big cut / gash between the tread, except one of mine had it going around half the tire, looked like an accident waiting to happen on the interstate.

I think you'll find a very wide range in mileage. I took my last truck out on some very rocky roads the first year with the oems. They made it 3000 miles and were all cut up and a lot of the tread lugs were broken off. They were LT all terrains, but the least expensive Firestone made at the time. Typically oem tires are middle of the line quality wise at best.

I wouldn't go very much farther on your tires by the look of that pic, and I think you were lucky to get that many miles out of them.

My stock tires went 25k km's and were finished. Though I drive a lot of gravel, the ameritracs suck. And you have the same amount of clearance a 4x4 has for tires and they come with 265's. Thats what I went to without a lift and there is still plenty of room.

I got about 30k from my Ameritrac's. Then about 43k from a set of Michelin Cross Terrains. I just got a set of GoodYear Wrangler's... we'll see how they go.

My '06 came with Bridgestone Dueler a/t 693's...got 50k out of them, could have probably gone another 15k but I don't like to ride on somewhat worn tires. I replaced them with Deuler a/t RHS, so far not impressed, they lack wet traction, we'll see about snow.

Yesterday, I had the OEM Bridgestone Duller H/T 684 II's replaced on my '05 Tahoe with a wopping 42K miles on them - they were pretty much toast at 40K & they were complete crap - loud, picked up rocks in the tread, no traction.

Anyway, the upshot is they were replaced with a fresh set of Michelin LTX M/S's - Gaaaawd what a difference! :P

... to the original post .... be careful of those tires... any cracks like that in the photo indicate that the casing is coming apart.... if you are going to limp it around for awhile... ok, but no high speed driving, and no heavy loads....

- possible that these tires were always unsuitable for the truck, or they have been heavily overloaded and abused... either way ... get new tires to be have a safe ride... don't get P rated or 'SUV' rated tires... get an LT rated tire with 8-ply or 10-ply rating.... TOYO OPEN COUNTRY AT is my choice.... Michelin LTX are great too, but cost more.
