Navigation Upgrade

It appears that GM makes a navigation upgrade kit for Tahoes, Suburbans, and Avalanches. Does anybody know if this kit will fit Silverados? It is GM part# 17801147. If it is made for Chevys, it must be the Bose Premium (Non-Lux) version of the navigation radio. I would appreciate any tips from people who have done a nav mod. It is bit pricey so I would like to get an idea of the difficulty of the install if I decide to do it in the distant future.

I just finished doing an install in my '07 which is very different, but it looks like people are installing that kit in Rainers and Trailblazers too.

As for the install, you can do it yourself. It's plug and play with a factory unit. You will be spending some time placing the gps antenna in its correct place under the dash. The hardest part for me was running the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) wire from the radio to the drivers side and then tapping into it on the drivers side.

Forum hiccup erased my earlier post, so here it is again...

I installed part #25846421, which is DVD, Rear Seat Ent., and back-up cam ready. It has the correct color green backlighting and I purchased the latest navigation DVD (#25974486) on ebay along with VSS/Voice harness and GPS antenna. It wasn't cheap, about $1900 total install cost with the nav unit bought new from GM, but I like the clean factory look. The hardest part of the install for me was removing the trim piece around the radio/HVAC controls...I thought sure it was gonna break! You have to pull like you mean to break it before it'll come loose. GPS antenna isn't all that hard to put in, just remove A pillar trim pieces and pop up the front dash panel and there is a snap-in spot already there for it from the factory. Thread the cord thru the dash and that's it.

If you have On-star and want the hands-free phone to work, the Voice harness needs to be connected to the VCIM module behind the radio and it can be tricky. VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is a single wire that needs to be spliced into the main harness block down by the firewall. This one is somewhat optional because the unit will work fine w/o it, but when you go thru a tunnel or are out of GPS antenna range, the nav unit won't work right.

Here is a link to a How-to article on ebay that I found very, very helpful:

I always wondered if the factory navigation had dead reckoning or not.

I ran around without the VSS wire hooked up for about a day. The Nav unit could give approximate locations and lay your route out on the map, but would not tell me turn-by-turn how to get to a destination. The VSS made the whole Nav unit come alive with those turn-by-turn prompts.

I entered "Disneyland" (yea, my kids are spoiled  ) as my destination that day which is about a 1/2 hour from me and it could tell me I got to Disneyland, but could not tell me what exits to get off on or where to turn.

Nice unit so far. The part number I installed was #15940102 with DVD capability for the RSE-Rear Seat Entertainment system

If you are still working on this I can help. I just joined the forum yesterday and am a GM specialist on navigation and integration. I am a certified programming technician with at least 150 different navigation installations under my belt from 2006 to 2010 vehicles.

I offer this kit if you are still interested. It includes everything you'll need. THe navigation unit with DVD built in, gm nav disc, gps antenna, owners manual and the harnesses. I sell it for 1499.00 complete and provide you with step by step instructions on the integration and installation.

I can also show you how to do some other cool things with this nav once installed like add AV inputs or take the signal from the DvD built in and run it to another screen like a visor, or flipdown or headrest system.

I am here to help.

Thanks

Thanks for your help. Its going to be a while before I decide to do this because it is so expensive. I will be sure to talk to you when I get ready to pull the trigger on it.
