Torque Management...what Exactly Is It?

Recommended Posts

In many posts I have read, I have seen torque management extensively. I am just wondering what exactly it is and what it does since I am getting ready to put in my corvette servo and get a BB tune and I know this is something Justin will ask me. I have read so much about people eliminating different percentages or eliminating it altogether. Can anyone shed alittle light on this subject?

#PIP4112H: Sag Or Hesitation On Acceleration (Normal Operating Characteristics) - keywords 4L60E 4L65E 4L70E 6L80 6L90 - (Apr 9, 2009)

Subject: Sag or Hesitation on Acceleration (Normal Operating Characteristics)

Models: 2007-2009 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade EXT, Escalade ESV

2006-2009 Cadillac XLR, XLR-V

2007-2009 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

2006-2009 Chevrolet Corvette

2007-2009 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL

2008-2009 Pontiac G8

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment on a sag or hesitation when accelerating under the following conditions:

When coasting with a closed throttle and then aggressively applying the throttle. Examples of this maneuver include a rolling stop or a lane change maneuver. In this type of maneuver, even though the accelerator is applied aggressively, the throttle blade is opened slowly for up to 0.7 seconds to help minimize driveline lash and clunking.

Also in a 6L80 or 6L90 (RPOs MYC or MYD) equipped vehicle when making a hard, complete stop with a closed throttle, immediately followed by an aggressive throttle opening the transmission downshifts may not be completed by the time the throttle is opened. As a result approximately 0.5 seconds of "zero" torque may be commanded to allow the shift to first gear to occur.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Both of the above conditions are a result of Torque Management and both of these conditions should be considered normal and no repairs should be attempted.

:eek Didn't know GM had a service bulletin about it... awesome description. Basically only thing I can add is that within the programming, timing is retarded to reduce power under the above stated instances.

You can have a custom tune done to either the PCM and/or TCM depending on year to remove or reduce the lag.

I'm going to have a BB tune in 2 weeks and wasn't sure if I should get it all removed or just a percentage. Are there any risks to having it removed, or will removing it just allow me to have better response with less lag? I mean driveline damage or anything? I have the corvette servo installed, don't know if that makes a difference?

It appears that 2007+ NBS have a more aggressive version of torque management software installed, i.e. it hinders performance more than on previous year model trucks. No doubt this has everything to do with the 100k power train warranty. GM is trying to reduce the drive line stress to a minimum to make breakdowns less likely.

Justin will ask you a few questions, and according to your answers, will put a "baseline" tune in it to start with,he will then tweak it to your satisfaction.

Just let Justin do his thing and you'll be fine,Trust me!

I thought so...I had an '07 NBS before my current '06 as a work vehicle and that always felt like it was being held back. At least now I know it was the computer doing it.

I always wondered what TM was actually doing to the drive system. Knew it was tuning but didn't know what it was controlling. Thanks for the explanation Steven, makes sense now.
