Stop And Go Clunk.

When I come to a complete stop, then proceed, I get a bit of a clunk coming from the rear end of my truck. I was told it could be that my drive shaft is loose. I put it on a lift and checked it out. Just a little bit of play which is supposed to be normal. I also was told it could be my rear shoes that are worn. What do you think?

Thanks a bunch!

any ways ,if it more of a squawkor a moan ,take off rear shaft put grease in the splines of the yoke,GM uses get this "special lubricant" for this, should go away

... yes, check out what gmtech4 has to say:

- lubricate the slip yoke,

... then if it still makes the noise the other problems might be:

- worn rear brakes

- worn rear differential

- transmission problems

.. all these are related to wear and tear, which greatly increases when a truck is driven hard and fast all the time.... I expect that your 3 year old truck is starting to feel the effects of old age already.

The truck used to haul a 5th wheel camper by an elderly couple before I bought it and he took care of it like it was a newborn. The only time I tow is in winter with sleds on a trailer. I can feel my brakes are getting a little bit softer on the pedal so I am pretty sure that I could use new brakes all around. Its not a sweek, its more of a small moan with a little bit of a clunk, Its only on a "here and there" basis that i notice it. Tranny is super strong still, and 4wd kicks in great, so I'm sure its not going to be them.

it is a problem, its called a lack of lubrication, you can pay a little now ,or alot latter,I have made alot of money off of guys like you at the dealer .

GM put out a bulletin on it along time ago.

I payed a little more attention to it this week and it sounds like an owl, or a "WHOO" sound comming from the rear. It doesn't effect the power transfer to the rear, nor any transmition slipping. Does this help out a little bit?

there is a hardened front driveshaft yoke to take care of this problem.. mine does it too

you mean front yoke on rear driveshaft.

just lub the splines ,its cheaper and it works

Have you any mechanical abilities? If so this is a pretty easy fix.

you can do it yourself without jacking up the truck ,however I jack it up ,put the rear axle on stands ,block the fronts ,7/16 shallow socket with a wobbler extension, either bark out the bolts with a 3/8 impact or a hand ratchet, remove the rear driveshaft and lube the inside of the front slip yoke with a lube the general uses called "special lubricant",and reassemble ,there are no master splines.

A guy that worked at a "stealership" just helped you ,one bad experience and you use that name ,its not right when you don't understand how it works ,I hate that ****in word..

have fun ,its very common and may have to do it a few times down the road ,just be carefull, make sure the u-joint is between the tabs upon reassembly..

after blocking the wheels and jacking it up, place the tranny in neutral so you may turn the driveshaft,no oil will piss on you from the t-case

any garage will most likely charge .5/hr,it costs 1.0 hr to get a u-joint replaced ,,,,.5 max

not all dealerships are stealerships but some near me are as i have had bad experiences at some of them.

thank you for your help, i should be able to do that without damaging anything

I took my truck into a local shop, and got them to look at the brakes. Brakes had some life left in them. I got them to repack/grease the rear driveshaft yoke splines and could you believe it... NO MORE CLUNK! Just smooth as can be(also got my front and rear diff fluids changed along with my transfer case) Thanks guys for all the help! Much Appreciated!
