Locking Rear End

for a 2001 2500hd 2wd what would be the best way to go for a locking rear/posi. I just want both wheels to grip and for maximum traction offroad. What would the cost be to have it converted?

I've heard of a "true locker" which is said to be really good for off roading, but also can aid in pre mature tire wear for on road use. I take it your truck does not have a locking diff at all?

I agree the Eaton is an excellent choice.

The other one would be to purchase one from a salvage yard.

I ran Detroit lockers in my jeep and they are indestuctable best locker out there! now that said it will wear out tires faster and make some for some strange steering on the road so an every day driver may not be best. There are electric lockers, and air lockers that are only used when you want it but locks up both wheels 100% use it on snow and ice can be a thrill and seat grabber. if you install one in front be carefull on real rock crawing GM's cv's may not take the abuse? a limited slip is best in front a gear driven locker like tru trac has less wear and no disc to wear out.cost is about $800 out the door. rear is about the same cost just how serious you want to get or need is the question. I'm running GM's stock locker rear and limited slip front have had good resultes but no serious rock crawing.

get a detroit true trac gear type locker, i had one in my last chevy for 2 years, i surprised some people going thru some stuff in two wheel drive. didnt have too use 4x4 as much. i loved it...bit hairy in the winter sometimes too, it was a manual tranny so if you down shifted sometimes the ass end would lock up and the truck would slide around...and yes the tires wore out a little faster in the back...but it was worth it i think. it hooked up wicked...no one legged **** A$$ peel outs ahahah. just dont get a G80...GARBAGE
