For Those Who Rotate Their Own Tires

What is the purpose of the aluminum looking circles pressed against the rotor around some of the studs? Is their any harm in taking these off? One of mine seems to be working its way up the stud.

They are galvanized steel retainers to keep the rotors from falling out of place when you remove the tire/wheel. Simply push or thread them back down snug against the rotor.

The retainers are only needed for transport and assembly operations of the axle to vehicle. After vehicle is assembled you can remove them.

Very true. But did you ever try to take one of those friggin things off? Unless you absolutely need to remove it to take the rotor off, just push it back on or don't even bother yourself about them.

If you ever plan to upgrade to aftermarket wheels, remove those clips.

I remove them from all my vehicles. I once had a wheel that would vibrate as if out of balance. I finally removed the clip and it was fine from that point on. They can sometimes interfere with proper seating of the wheel. I use side-cutters to cut it and then pliers to remove.

I remove them if I need to work on the brakes. The split real easy if you take a screwdriver to them and twist (or needlenose pliers)
