[email protected] Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 I was driving along and lost 3rd and 4th gear in my 98 chev 1500 pickup. It has a 4l60e transmission. It happened all of a sudden. The fluid isn't burnt and is like new. There is 200k on it.
gmtech4 Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 was the oil changed lately? the 3-4 clutch failure on these trannies is common, you can just get the 3-4 clutches but the last time I tried the part number for it ,it was unavailable thru GM but take it in and have a tranny guy road test ,he'll tell ya it has to come out and apart for a looksy
trigen7 Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 200K and you lost 3-4? I would say that you had a good tranny! If it lasted that long before toasting the 3-4 clutch pack, then you should feel blessed. In my humble opinion as a modest tranny rebuilder, replacing the 3-4 clutch pack only on a 200k tranny is like not showering for a week then just putting on only, fresh undies. Time for a new or rebuilt tranny my friend.
Nytemare Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 replacing the 3-4 clutch pack only on a 200k tranny is like not showering for a week then just putting on only, fresh undies. Best analogy ever
rodram Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 I agree... with the recommendation for a total transmission and torque converter rebuild (... and with the analogy!!!) I lost my transmission in my 97 this summer at 210,000 km (130,000 miles which I hear is about average), got the total rebuild recommended by my regular mechanic, and am now very happy with the way this truck runs. When you get a total rebuild on these 4L60E's now you get some stronger parts than the original equipment and they run and shift much crisper. If you plan to keep your truck for another year or two, you won't regret getting the work done.... then you might want to keep it even longer. likely cost $2500 to $3000 all in for parts and labor.
txab Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Time to man up and spend some cash. Rebuild time.
[email protected] Posted November 4, 2009 Author Posted November 4, 2009 Thanks for all the info. I will have a tranny guy check it out for me. Thanks again Quincy
