Refilling An Automatic Tranny

I have my first truck with an auto tranny, all were manual before this one.

Its a 2001 GMC 2500hd with the bigger...??80 tranny.

 

I drained the pan, removed the pan, removed the filter, cleaned out the pan and cleaned off the gasket. I installed the new filter and reinstalled the pan.

 

I'm use to seeing a fill plug on the side of the manual trannys. Hoe do I fill this one? Do I pour the new fluid? Down the dipstick tube?

 

Any idea how much fluid this tranny holds? The owners manual only shows what type fluid to use, doesnt say how much.

Pour it down the dipsitck tube. With pan removal on a 6L80 I usually start with 7 quarts of fluid, start the vehicle and shift through the gears leaving it in gear for a few seconds and recheck. The fluid should be in the middle of the hash marks, if not fill till it is.

 

Then run the vehicle for awhile to heat up the fluid and take it for a drive reaching overdrive so that you are sure the fluid fills all cavities it needs to and recheck level. It will usually go down a little once you get it on the road and get into overdrive.

I did exactly what you said but when I check the dipstick the fluid is about an inch above the full mark. I wiped the dipstick and rechecked a few times, still high. I never bothered to check the level before I drained it to see where it showed on the dipstick.

 

But I drained some out, maybe a quart. Without running the engine I checked the level again, still high???

You are to check it with the engine running and the trans warm.

I always heard it was through the dipstick tube too. I've never done it though.

Did you drive it? It will suck some down once you drive it. The pan removal spec for that trans is 7.8 quarts, 7 quarts has never had me overfilled. If it ends up overfull do drain some out, you do not want it overfull.

I did let the engine run and shifted through all the gears, it was high. I drove it a couple of miles, was still high. I drained about a quart (engine off) still high.

 

I'll drain more out....thanks !!
