Silverado 2002 Fuel Vent Replacement - True/false

Would someone who is knowledgeable with this model explain something...

I recently (today) took my truck into the Chevrolet dealership (Clearwater, Fl) to diagnose the 'Service Engine Soon' light.

I will type what was printed on my invoice:

FOUND EVAP CODE P0440. EVAP LEAK. FOLLOWED DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE 743872. FOUND THAT THE

VENT VALVE ON GAS TANK WAS CRACKED AND FUEL TANK MUST BE REPLACED TO CORRECT CONCERN.

Price $1,500 (parts/labor)

Does this sound correct to you? Must the entire tank be replaced if the valve is cracked? The tech claims that the

valve is 'fused' onto the tank and cannot be removed. Suggested that the tank was not original. I have been

the only owner of this truck. Would someone elaborate if there is any truth to these statements.

Spending $1500 just to fix a cracked vent valve is bit unreasonable...

Your opinions are sorely welcome.

The real question is:

Does it really take a new fuel tank to replace the vent valve?

Is it just possible to remove the vent valve from the tank?

I'm not going to comment on the price for several reasons. You didn't break down the parts and labor (or they didn't give it to you). I don't have access to parts pricing. And I don't have access to labor time guides at home, even if I did I don't know if this is the side mounted tank or the rear mounted one (the rear mounted is quite a bit harder then the side mounted).

As for the diagnosis, yes there is a valve on the top of the tank that is not serviceable without replacing the entire tank and would cause the code you have if it were cracked.

Thanks for the response... I was not as upset with the price (it is too high, however) as I was with the fact that the tank would have to be replaced. Just didn't seem right, to me. Anyway, I appreciate the information. Take care -

I just went through the Fuel Vent Code P0446 & P0440 on my '02 Siverado, I'm not sure this is what your looking for but it might help you with a little information. Go here: http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=104951 Look at the last post for the solution of my problem. IMO, it sounds like your dealer is trying to pull a fast one...Good Luck

No! The Vent Solenoid Valve is definitely replacable, please check my response at the end of this thread. I went through this with my '02 Silverado last week, GM has completely re-designed the Vent Valve Solenoid. Nothing is "molded" into the tank at the vent location. If possible, pressurize the fuel tank 8-10psi then feel around the vent valve for a leak, it's a little hard to get to because it sets pretty close to the top of the tank, but it can be replaced.
