hey guys here's the deal. i have a '03 gmc sierra and as you know, the clusters on the '03-'04's have faulty steppers. i bought a used working cluster a year ago which had low miles (i saved the exact #) and replaced it. everything works now but the odometer shows low miles. before i replaced it, i saved all the numbers (miles and time) on the new and old odometer so that i can calculate the exact number of miles that i have for the future. anyways the future is now and i wanted to get my car appraised at a carmax. i told carmax about the cluster and they wanted nothing to do with my truck and said they'd give me only $1500 cuz of the odometer issue. i understand that no one wants to buy a truck or car not knowing the true mileage. anyways, is there anything i can do to get my truck's odometer to read the exact mileage? i need to sell this truck. please help.

you pop into the dealership and they will reflash it for you.

Just tell them the exact mileage you had on the old cluster, plus the miles you have put on it since swapping to the new one.

it is what it is ,I don't think they can do it ,on a NEW cluster they /I could ,but you can't just reright over milage with a scanner .

I think you cheated and just got burned .

so you get a "fail"

good luck pal,IMHO,your screwed, you need a new cluster and power up your old cluster to get the milage etc so the tech can program it all in the new cluster,

let us know what happens please

edit:if a tech ****s up the milage on a new cluster ,it is done as I rember so ya ^^^^^^^^

save up $500. plus 1 hr labour

Shitty...I thought you could re-write them with a code from GM....

yeah your screwed man....time for a new cluster.

If you really want to get rid of the truck...spend the 500+labor so you can get something better than 1500 for it.

of course its an 03...so you may only get like 2500 for it anyway, depending on mileage and condition. My 03 is valued at 7000, last I checked about 6 months ago...and that's the selling value...not the trade-in value. I only have 60K miles on mine and its almost showroom clean.

Bullcrap,... You can get the mileage programmed in the programmer. Techni-car in Orlando Florida and/or Cleveland ohio is a GM certified cluster repair shop. They will charge you around $50 to do the mileage swap. There's no difference from a new cluster to a used cluster in programming the mileage and hour meter. I've done it twice!

Worse case scenario, you buy a new cluster for $260 or less and have the mileage/hr meter transferred to the new cluster.

It MAY still be a problem since he has already removed the old one. Federal law is very strict about odometers. If a shop just changes the info to what anyone SAYS the mileage is, they can be in for very hefty fines. The shop may or may not be willing to do the mileage set since the old cluster is already out. I am not sure if there is a way to match the old cluster up with a VIN.

He will just have to check around to see. One other thing. If he signs a title, I would be sure I marked the "mileage altered" section, with the explanation. Doing it any other way could get him jail time.

It's so easy for people to change the mileage on these vehicles now, I don't trust them when looking at used vehicles. At least I'm very skeptical. There have been several car dealers in areas I've been in, changing the mileage on the clock. They got busted in a sting op. finally
