Bug Shields And Hood Flutter

I have this annoying as hell hood flutter at 70 mph that flutters the hood and sounds like sand hitting the windshield. I'm thinking it could be the aftermarket bug shield, any other ideas?

I have the AVS chrome hood shield no noise or flutters even not at high speed

there was a tsb for this issue but i think it only affected 2003-2007.5 silverados..... havent heard of it in gmt900 trucks.

Trust me, it happens on the 09's too. I have the same issue after installing a WeatherTech bug deflector. To me it sounds like weather stripping fluttering around.....

I had the same thing before I took mine off. At 65 and above it would make that annoying flapping/tapping type noise. It is basically your bug shield changing aerodynamics and directing the wind into the weather stripping differently.

 

There is a fix for it posted here where you peel back your weather stripping and add a few drops of glue to keep it held tight and prevent that noise.

Tapping, Clicking or Ticking Noise at Windshield Area (R and R Right and Left Windshield Side Reveal Moldings to Add Double-Sided Tape) - (Nov 10, 2009)

 

 

Subject: Tapping, Clicking or Ticking Noise at Windshield Area (R&R Right and Left Windshield Side Reveal Moldings to Add Double Sided Tape)

 

 

Models: 2007-2010 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT

 

2007-2010 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe

 

2007-2010 GMC Sierra, Sierra Denali, Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali, Yukon Denali XL

 

 

Condition:

Some customers may comment on hearing a tapping, clicking or ticking noise at the windshield area. This condition occurs more frequently while driving at highway speeds and could be exaggerated on vehicles with front bug guard deflectors.

 

Cause:

This condition may be caused by air/wind causing the windshield side reveal moldings to move, generating a noise.

 

Correction:

Remove both windshield reveal moldings, add double-sided tape and re-install the moldings following the steps below:

 

Using tape or a grease pencil, mark the position of the inboard edge of both left and right reveal moldings onto the windshield, following the contour of the molding.

 

Remove the left and right windshield side reveal moldings. Refer to Windshield Side Reveal Molding Replacement in SI.

Being careful not to affect the tape or grease pencil marks, clean and prep the glass at the seal interface with Glass Adhesion Promoter, P/N 12378555 (in Canada, use 88901239).

 

Apply 3M Automotive Adhesion Promoter 06396, or equivalent, to the underside of the reveal molding seals.

 

Tip:

An approximate 600 mm (24 in) length of tape should allow for overlap at the top to be trimmed back leaving a tail of release liner and, at minimum, should reach the fender cut line at the bottom.

 

Apply a 600 mm (24 in) length of 3M Automotive Acrylic Plus Attachment Tape 06386 (1.14 mm (0.045 in) thick x 6.35 mm (0.25 in) wide), or equivalent, to both sides of the windshield. Ensure the tape position is centered between the windshield edge and the tape/grease pencil line. Do not remove the release lining from the tape yet.

 

Reinstall the reveal molding to one side by sliding the molding downward and ensuring that the top lip is engaged at the upper edge of the windshield.

 

Install the fasteners to the reveal molding, starting from the top. Refer to Windshield Side Reveal Molding Replacement, in SI.

Lifting the top edge of the reveal molding, grab the tail of the release lining and pull downward removing the lining.

 

Press or roll the reveal molding against the windshield ensuring adhesion of the tape to the glass.

Repeat steps 6-9 on the opposite side.

Remove tape or clean the grease pencil marks from the windshield.

 

If positioned correctly, trimming of the double sided tape should not be necessary, however inspect the reveal moldings for any tape not covered and trim off any exposed tape.

Important: After taping the windshield reveal moldings, avoid washing the vehicle as well as excessive contact with the windshield reveal moldings for a minimum of 72 hours.

After reading some posts, I am heading to the auto parts store and either getting 3M Two sided tape or silicone caulk and running it down the weather stripping on the windshield. Thanks MS3DALE and others.

What you could do first just to make sure thats your problem....get some electrical or masking tape and run a piece down each side of the windshield where it meets the side moldings,then take your truck for a ride and see if the noise is gone,if so then you can proceed with removing the moldings and applying double-face tape.

Applied the tape and it is the mouldings. Where would I get the tape and the promoter without buying a pallet of the stuff from 3M directly? Also is there another way to get the tape under the moulding without removing it completely, like opening the door and just lossening the screws to the moulding instead of removing it?
