2009 Doors Lock On Own

This is the second time this has happened to me. Thank god for onstar. I get out of my truck with keys in the ignition, shut the door. The parking lights flash, horn beeps, and the doors lock. Errr what the hell is going on? Its a 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab 5.3l loaded. Thanks!

My dad went and test drove my truck before I purchased it and he said it did the same thing to him right before he drove off the lot. I haven't had it happen yet to me, but needless to say I don't leave the keys in the ignition without having my spare with me just in case. I just assumed that he accidentally hit something in the truck while getting out, but I'd rather not find out.

Did you initially start it with the remote start? I locked myself out the first day I got mine home.

Easy one. If you happen to bump the lock button by accident, then shut the door, in about 10 seconds or so, the horn will beep and lock it up. Had it done to me on my 08, a couple of times. I guess it is part of the security systems way of keeping you from leaving keys in an unlocked truck.

Yes I did initally start the truck via remote start. The key wasnt fully inserted in the ignition when I shut the door. I heard you can't lock yourself out if the key is fully inserted in the ignition. Any truth to that? I'm pretty sure I didnt hit the lock button on my way out.

I cannot lock my truck with the lock button on the door, or with the mechanical lever if the keys are in the ignition, Well it locks and than unlocks as soon as you shut the door. But If I push the lock button on the remote it will lock and stay locked no matter what. I rolled down my window and tried this one day...just to test out the theory of never locking the keys in.

I too tried locking the keys in on purpose. If the key is fully in the ignition and you lock and shut the door, it will unlock the door; supposedly it will unlock whichever door closed last, didn't try it on the passenger door.

I have gotten out and accidentally bumped the lock button and WHA LA, "Hello On-Star....."

You can turn off the delay locking with the DIC. This only works with Crew Cabs.

 

From the manual:

On vehicles with a crew cab, this feature allows you to

select whether or not the locking of the vehicle’s doors

will be delayed. When locking the doors with the power

door lock switch and a door is open, this feature will delay

locking the doors until five seconds after the last door is

closed. You will hear three chimes to signal that the

delayed locking feature is in use. The key must be out of

the ignition for this feature to work. You can temporarily

override delayed locking by pressing the power door lock

switch twice or the lock button on the RKE transmitter

twice. See Delayed Locking on page 2-11 for more

information.

Press the customization button until DELAY DOOR

LOCK appears on the DIC display. Press the set/reset

button once to access the settings for this feature.

Then press the customization button to scroll through

the following settings:

OFF: There will be no delayed locking of the

vehicle’s doors.

ON (default): The doors will not lock until five seconds

after the last door is closed.

NO CHANGE: No change will be made to this feature.

The current setting will remain.

I have an '07 GMC, CC, NBS, and have done this so many times. All it takes is that little, and actually not felt, bump of your hand on the lock button when you exit the cab. I heard that dreaded horn honk and just stopped in my tracks after recognizing it for what it meant. I found out later that, as "compulynx" posted, there is a way to disarm this feature. I also now carry a key which will only unlock the door hidden on my truck. Thanks, David
