30k On Odo

Just got 30k on the clock.

What is advisable to do in the maintenance department?

I know this has been discussed before, but what is recommended as the appropriate trannie service? flush/filter/drop the pan, what? Not a very knowledgable trannie person here......

What about flushing the radiator/brakes? IS that needed/recommended.

I plan on keeping this truck for a long time and want to do what is needed.

Last time I was in for service, asked the writer this question...he pulls out a sheet with a "recommended" 30k service = $1250...

Yeah, right ! HOWEVER, I want to do what should be done, but a FUEL FILTER...among other necessities like FULL BRAKE SERVICE? what a crock......Pads still have plenty on them, brakes are fine. Just need some straight talk.

Fluids, plugs, are all claimed to be good for 100,000. My old truck I didnt touch anything till 100,000. Sold it with 136k and I still see it on the road 4 yrs later.

Change the oil. Wait till 50,000 to change the gear, tranny, transfercase fluids. Your brakes will last 100k miles typically on these trucks. I wouldnt even touch the radiator fluid till 100k.

I would give it a shot of Seafoam in the intake to clean everything out, and if is due for an oil change...give it one.

Check all your fluid levels, have the coolant tested, rotate tires, if the oil looks a little on the black side, have a hot oil flush done to clean everything out....other than that...no real serious maintenance.

Oh and check/change your air filter...depending on how it looks.

Oil change yes. Extra service if you want to. You wont get any extra special trade in value for flushing or changing anything.

You bought a truck with 100,000 mile tranny fluid and 100,000 spark plugs? don't service with emotion.

How is it that Americans change their oil every 5000 miles and Canadian dealer want 5000km intervals? That is 37% sooner.

Ca$h grab.

You will hear many different opinions. Some have luck with the recommended service intervals. If your are like me, though...

Do a tranny flush now while your transmission is strong and can still take the pressure.

Diff fluid change (should be your second one if you changed it after 1K when you replaced your break-in oil).

Transfer case fluid change if 4WD.

Coolant flush - you will be surprised how dirty yours looks compared to all new coolant even with only 30K+ miles on it

Pour 1 can of Seafoam in your gas tank every 5-6 tanks of gas.

Run 1/3 can of Seafoam into your brake booster vacuum line for a top-end cleaning; balance of that can into your oil right and drive it for a few miles before your next oil change.

Use Mobil 1 full synthetic if you haven't switched already and before you rack up too many miles with dino.

If you have a 4L60E, upgrade to the Vette servo at a bare minimum and add a transmission cooler (both to prolong transmission life) and consider a TransGo shift kit while your mileage is still low.

Thanks to all for the input.

Hmmmm... seafoam. Heard it being used a lot in motorcycles. Never thought of running it thru the car.

I don't have the six speed, have the 4-speed auto.

You're right, the coolant is not as crisp looking as it was some time ago. I think I would be comfortable having them service the trannie.

I run whatever oil the dealer puts in, and change it religiously every 3-4000 miles. Not sure what they use (pathetic, I know).

Defferential/Transfer Case fluid. Excellent thought. Never entered my mind. Sounds like a sound thing to do as well.

Appreciate the input !!

On my trucks...I always change the Transmission and Rear End Fluid at 50K miles...I run Valvoline Synthetic in the Motor...I change the Air Filter at 30K....never really ever had to do much else...except the Typical Brake Service or U-Joints....I'd be curious to know peoples take on Fuel System Treatments??

Yeah...I have heard of and used seafoam in cars and trucks for years now...

They can test the coolant for freezing point and pH to see if it needs changing...you may not have to change it, usually its good for 5 years or 60K

Dont feel bad about not knowing what the dealer uses for oil...it comes in a barrel...and unless you get out there to see what color the barrel is you will have no idea.

as for the trans..I wouldn't do a flush until 50K...I would probably only change the filter (pan service) if I was going to do anything.

I use Lucas upper cylinder lube every 3 or 4 tanks. Supposed to lubricate the top piston ring clean injectors and valves and lube the fuel pump.

Don't know if it does any of that...but it makes me feel good.:lol:

I have always been a every 20k trannie guy..... As far as brakes.... 5yrs or when ever you change pads flushing is what I do. Usually when I do 40 I change the fluid in the differential also....

Regarding maintance.

On my previous truck (2001 S-10 4.3) with the 100K plugs....at 60k I was missing the electrod on 2 plugs, and I changed the dexcol at the same time.

I'd say swap out the RTFM...

As mentioned above a transmission service, just a pan drop to change the filter and fluid would be a good thing. I changed out the fluid on our 08 Acadia's transmission at 30k and it was way darker than it should have been. It looked good on the dipstick but when it came out, it was darker than the fresh fluid I put back in. Cheap insurance when it comes to transmissions, especially if it is still the factory fill. Like the engine it will have all the wear in contaminants in it as well.

The differentials again wouldn't be a bad thing. It isn't a major cost and that way you know it was done and you will be good for a long time. Same goes for transfer case.
