Rear Vision Back Up Camera Systems For 09 Sierra

So I got my camera system last night, fedex just laid it at the door eventhough my wife was right inside starting dinner. I didin't have my truck last night so I didn't get to get started, maybe this weekend will work out well depending on the weather in OK, but I did open it and it looks really good. I am rather excited to get this thing going, will try to post pics if I can of both the parts and the work as I go for anyone that is interested.

so after a short run of bad luck (local dealership kept my truck for 2 days to find a rattle in the door) i was able to start my install last night, didn't get far because the holes that need to be drilled in the tailgate and bed of the truck claimed the pilot bits of my hole saw kit. Apparently the 45 bucks i spent on the lennox kit could have been better spent elsewhere. Anyway the camera bezel is mounted and the holes drilled for the cable through the tailgate. pics to follow.

 

the ice storm has slowed me down slightly, and i will need to find a new hole saw method to get through the firewall by the MBEC but am working on it today. This seems like the most complicated part thus far.

The instructions I saw at that link are for a truck with Nav Radio.

I wonder if my 2009 Silverado has been prewired via a harness for the Camera at the mirror.

I have the auto dimming/on-star mirror.

 

As a side note, the truck was prewire for the "DIC", but did not come with that "option", I bought the "DIC" panel and installed it myself.

Any guesses?

Agreed, the uni I have is the smaller one (from my old car audio installing days) and these holes were inch and an eighth. Naturally when my wife saw the price of the larger uni ($80) vs. the cost of the hole saw kit ($45) I lost that battle. Of course I think my point was made for me and I may get the uni now, al though i'm not sure i'll ever use it again.

 

System is installed and working wonderfully, the view from the camera is tremendous, really wide angle, can see the trailer hitch, works great in the dark, and there is little indication that this is not completely factory. I have pics of some of the work, and the finished product, will get them up as soon as I can manipulate the images from 15M files and figure out how to post pics (that's something I have never done).

 

Overall, really impressed, and very happy i spent the dollars. Seems like a bunch of money, but should add some re-sale value, and the beauty of using this is already apparent.

Based in the install i will say that the truck is not prewired to the mirror currently. As a matter of fact the appearance is that if you have the temp in the mirror those locations in the harness will be replaced with new wires (they come included with the kit) for the back up mirror. Basically locations 6 and 7 of the plug at the mirror in my truck were empty and I added the two wires to the plug from the included harness, ran it across the headliner, down the a-pillar, and to the MBEC where the electrical connections were made (again adding new pins to the factory harnesses).

Is this the OEM GM Camera/Mirror, part Numbers 19172558 or 19172557?

I got the GM accessory 19172557 because I have the locking tailgate, but they are essentially the same kit (the literal difference is the bezel designed for the locking vs non-locking gate).

I was curious as this product was several hundred cheaper than the Accessory mirror.

I'll get pics up soon, when I get into the office in the morning I'll get the pics downloaded and see if I can figure how to post a few, if there are specific angles of the finished goods you would like let me know and i'll try to shoot them.

 

As for install time, i believe I had about a full hour and a half into it, but I did take time to have coffee with the wife between stages. I'd consider the tailgate one stage, then the front end (mbec, and mirror wiring), then the routing of the vehicle harness below the truck. In my opinion the hardest and most stressful was the mbec stuff, i spent a bit more time being a little more careful than i needed to be on this part just becasue I am an anal retentive perfectionist. It could have gone faster but i did take the time to make sure everything was perfect.

 

BTW the particulars on the system, the camera and screen are color, not B&W as I initially thought, the mirror is slightly larger than the factory mirror but in only the matter of a day I was able to get used to it. The camera does get mucked up a little in the snow and ice, but even then it is only a little spotty, still very usable. I haven't tried the on-star buttons yet, but they all light up like they work so my only assumption is that they work alright.

 

My next upgrade is already on it 's way, the 2-way advanced remote starter, i expect it to be here wednesday or so and will tackle that late next week or during the weekend.

I will post more of the camera bezel when I clean it up a little, the ice storm kinda mucked up the back end of the truck and it looks kinda bad, but the camera still works pretty well as you can see from the image shot this moring on the way to work with all the muck and stuff.
