I bought a 09 Onstar Bluetooth Module P/N 20783877 from jonathan12 on this forum. I paid $275 shipped for the module. It's a little high for bluetooth but it's OEM and that's what I wanted. It took about 20 to swap the modules out and put everything back together. I paired my Blackberry Tour and made test calls. The caller-id displays in the DIC display as well.

 

I want to thank all of the members who posted information on how to do the swap. I couldn't have done it without that useful information.

 

I did not take any pics because there are already several threads covering the topic.

Congrats, now be ready to spend 30 minutes to a hour to program 50 or so names along with their phone numbers into your Truck's bluetooth. :tumbleweed:

The OEM Bluetooth is one of my favorite features of my truck!.

 

"You Have an incoming call from". etc etc..

Yeppers OEM Bluetooth is cool, part that sux is that; I had to go and program and record the contacts names myself. :tumbleweed: I wish my gf would have recorded them or I if I could have gotten a chic with a sexy voice to record my dialing list for me...

I can't play music through it. It will not let you use it for that. Basically, the OnStar module acts like a bluetooth earpiece. Yeah it sucks having to enter all the contacts.

This is just what I am looking for. I have a 2008 with navi, onstar, xm. Can I just get the Onstar Bluetooth Module P/N 20783877 and then have OEM bluetooth?? Can I order it from the dealership? Do you have directions on how to swap it out? Thank you

I know theres a bunch of threads and posts on this topic... but could you summarize it all into one post? The parts you need, the installation, dealer programming required?, etc, etc.

Here's what is needed to swap your OEM OnStar to a OEM Bluetooth Onstar module.

 

Bluetooth OnStar Module Part Numbers: 25984444 and 20783877(newer)

YOU CANNOT GET THEM from the dealer, online parts stores, etc.... You have to buy them from an individual(ie..ebay, member classifieds)

 

If the module does not have the bluetooth antenna attached the part number is 15938939.

 

You do not have to change your steering wheel controls unless you want to see the phone symbol. They work the same except the newer ones have the phones symbol. If you want to buy the newer steering wheel switches the part number is 25851951. I did not as it was not necessary to work.

 

Steps to swap the modules:

Remove the trim bezel surrounding the radio, ac controls, and accessory panel. There are 8 or 9 clips that hold it in place. I used a butter knife to pry the trim bezel off. The butter knife is thin enough to go between the trim and the outer console. I pried the trim bezel out enough to slide a long thin flathead screwdriver under it. I slid it approximately half way so the tip was next to one of the clips. Gently apply pressure on the clip, you will think it is going to break, until it pops loose. Go around the bezel until all the clips are loose. Remove the accessory panel, ac controls and radio in that order. There is enough slack in the stock wiring to leave them connected. Just pull them out and move them over to one side. I put the accessory panel and ac controls on the right then the radio on the right. You will see the OnStar module at the bottom of the opening. It is held into place by two clips. One one either side. One on the left and one on the right. I used two long thin flathead screw drivers to hold the clips back off of the OnStar module so I could use both hands to lift the unit out of the retaining bracket. The OnStar module does not have a lot of slack to pull it out while connected. I disconnected it by removing the connector on the right first and then worked my way across the back from right to left until all of the connectors were disconnected. The antenna round antenna connectors are removed by pushing down on the retaining clips and sliding them back.

 

If you want to retain OnStar functionality it is a good idea to take picture of the label on top of the new module. This will give you the Station ID number and other important information needed to complete the programming.

 

After I plugged the new OnStar module in I tested everything before putting it all back together.

 

To access the bluetooth I pressed mute(voice) button and waited of the beep. Then said OnStar. Waited for the system to say OnStar ready then said bluetooth. Waited for the system to say bluetooth ready. You can say help to get a list of options. I chose "Pair" to pair my blackberry. You can follow the voice instructions to complete the pairing to the devices. Good news is that you can pair to multiple devices. If you and your wife or friend are riding together you can pair both phones. If your phone is not available you can tell the system to use the other phone to make the call. Or it your friend wants to call someone using their caller id they can choose to use their phone from the list instead of yours. Pretty cool!

 

Enabling OnStar functionality. I'll start by saying I have not completed this part of the process yet so I am speculating. I pressed the OnStar button and of course they answered using the wrong name. I told them I performed a hardware swap and needed to update their system with new OnStar module station ID number. They said I had to take it to the dealer first so they could run it through the "TIS2" web program. Then I could call them back to move my service to the new module.

 

I plan to do this when I replace my non-DVD nav unit with a DVD nav unit.I'll get them to remove the THEFTLOCK and program the new OnStar module in the same visit.

Just FYI that it's not absolutely necessary to add all your contacts. I only added just the few that I call the most often.

 

The others that I don't call that often are still avail via the Trucks handsfree BT. Instead of hitting the button on the steering wheel and saying "Call XXXXX". you just access your address book from your phone. Pull up your contact and press CALL. The conversation will be over the BT Speaker of the truck. Not the handset.

 

I just don't see the point of adding every single contact I have on my phone when I only call a few on a regular basis.

Lol, thats the whole point to be "hands free" I don't want to have to go to my phone period... lol :uhoh:

thanks for the info ray!

 

im going to start keeping my eye out for one of these modules.

 

let us know how the final Onstar setup goes. past experience tells me that the dealer will probably have no clue what im talking about or no clue what to do to program the new module to my truck.... so id like to have "instructions in hand" when i go in there to do this.

Ray......THANK YOU so much!!! That is exactly what I was looking for!!!!! Now I am on a quest to find that part # 20783877

 

One question Ray.......what year is your truck? I thought all of the Navigation head units played DVD's?

 

Let us know how the Onstar programing goes. I would like to keep my Onstar.

I have an 07 Sierra Denali. Unfortunately my nav unit does not play DVDs. The ones that play DVDs have a DVD symbol on the front. Mine is plain....:)

      Your tire pressure issue may just be batteries, you can reset them using tge Ing switch (I think) and the owner's  manual. ChatGTP will b e a faster, better help than Google.

      The thinking is that starting out in a higher gear makes it easier to avoid applying excessive torque when pressing the gas pedal. In a modern 4wd truck with 4 low and a limited slip or locking rear end, I would use 4 low and try to crawl up the ramp. Sometimes if they are too slippery, you have to back up to let the boat have some bouyancy, and then accelerate briskly to get some momentum to help you pull the through the slippery parts.

      I have a Retrax pro that I first had on my 2020 chevy and transferred it to my current GMC.  It stays in the garage most of the time, so hard for me to judge it's long term weather resistance.  It still works perfectly, been very durable.  It doesn't see oil patch usage, but it's not a mall queen.  It keeps most things mostly dry (small leaks) and the security of it is enough to slow someone down but not keep them out for long.  I would buy one again, it works for me.

      Thanks to the convenience of Amazon, I was able to get a few things done to the truck today.  I installed Carquest Premium oil and air filters with five quarts of Mobil1 High Mileage 10-30 along with a quart of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 I already had.  The latch for the flip up center console lid was broken so I replaced it along with the power mirror switch.  I found my push retainer assortment this morning and reattached the plastic under the bumper and it was only held on with a few screws and retainers.  Then I programmed a new remote keyless entry fob so I can lock my dog in the truck when I take her out with me (I've got to keep the air going for her since it's been in the 100s).  Finally, I ordered some LED interior bulbs and replaced the reading lamps.  The front lights are working fine while one of the back lights only works intermittently and the other not at all.   While under the truck, I found the source of at least one of the noises: the sway bar links need replacing.  I ordered a set of Suspension Dudes links with Code Red bushings.  Never heard of them, but they're made in the USA and have decent reviews.  While making yet another Amazon order, I went ahead and added a set of front tow hooks.  I went with red, since that's the color of the sway bar link and bushings and it should look decent enough on a black and chrome truck.  Speaking of which, it doesn't bug me much, but the passenger side mirror has a chrome cap while the driver side doesn't, so eventually I'll make them match one way or another.  Oh, and I ordered a $20 TPMS reset tool.  No idea if it will do anything for my sensors but it was cheap and will work for the Ford Transit Connect as well.     For tradition's sake, I ordered a new oil change wrench.  I kept the Snap-On 9/16"x15mm GM wrench I bought when I was 18 in the 2006 GMC from the time I bought that truck until the truck was lost.  While I was tempted, there's no need to spend $80 for a new SO wrench, or even $50 with shipping for a used one on Ebay.  I just bought a Duratech 15mm extra-long ratcheting wrench to do the job as needed.  It works, and if I like that wrench enough, I'll buy the set.

      The recall is for exactly this issue - those drain holes combined with the limited environmental capability of the tailgate electronics card inside the tailgate were a problem. The “safety issue” was the potential for the tailgate to spontaneously open, but all kinds of tailgate misbehavior can occur from water contamination of that control card.    There is no real fix yet. The initial recall just disabled the tailgate. Later, when parts became available, they would replace bad parts with new parts of the same bad design. My dealer is going nuts because the few times I let them get their hands on my truck, my tailgate is off due to a slide-in camper installation. They really want to cut my tailgate wires, but I won’t give them the chance. I will let them get their dirty hands on it when a real fix (redesign) is available.  My tailgate, which works just fine with sealant plugging the drain holes, will remain safe in a dry storage crate until then.
