My Garage

OK,

I have a fairly new home 6 years old and the garage floor is the nicest I have ever owned. I have tried hard to keep oil and grease off. I want to know if anyone here has tried the floor coatings that are out their. I have contacted http://www.premiergarage.com and they seem a bit on the expensive side.

However I don't want to purchase an inferior product and have it look like crap in a few months/years. Premier has a 10 year warranty and I am guessing that I will be on to a bigger home within that time frame.

Anyone have any of the epoxy floor systems? Pros/Cons? How is it holding up and how long have you had it? How much did you pay?

I know this isn't really related to the full size truck but it is where I park my loved truck.

TIA

see my other post in which you asked. After seeing some others I decided to go with the rustoleum professional kit (supposedly thicker) and I am going to clearcoat over it for added protection. Should hopefully be done in May sometime.

Also with you being in Texas I would suspect yours would hold up better. Mine has seen temps from in the upper 90's to 0. Snow, salt, etc.

How big is your garage (sq ft)?

How much are you looking to spend?

Are you applying it yourself or hiring someone to do it?

About 4 years ago we put loose lay vinyl down in our garage. Oil and other spills clean up with a paper towel. It has held up well. I put a piece of plywood under jacks or jack stands to avoid tearing it. The cost was under $1 a square foot and my labor.

Here are couple of pictures

You should see my shop. I did my entire supercharger install without using my droplight once. It's awesome to work out there for that simple fact...You can never have too many lights.

As for the OP...I've got some epoxy -still in the boxes- sitting on a shelf to do my shop, and I'm thinking that I'm not going to use it as I'll pretty much be without shop for a couple of weeks. I'd have to either take EVERYTHING out of there (not an option) and let the stuff cure for a few days, or do it one half at a time, doubling the time frame.

I'm pretty sure that if I coat my floors, it'll be with an industrial floor paint. 10x easier to put down, and since it's a lot cheaper and easier to repair...I won't sweat it much if I take a chunk out of it...Which I'll do because I can break anything :fume:

Cool pics BruceW, How does it hold up to hot tires? I have to back my truck in the garage, its the ONLY way it will fit. That being said I have to turn the tires a good amount to get the front end of the truck to hug the wall for maximum space, I am wondering if that vinyl will hold up to hot tires and the twisting of the tires every time I go in and out of the garage.

I am considering having someone do it if the price and warranty is reasonable. I have a few chips and cosmetic blemishes that need to be fixed prior to getting it coated.

I coated my shop with Quikcrete epoxy.... CRAPPIE.... NO GOOD stuff.... I am thinking about soda blasting it all up and painting it with UCoat-it..... I have UCoat-it on my front porch and garage.... Looks great just about impervious. Acid and battery fluids can spill but need to be wiped up ASAP.. The quckcrete did not even take the chlorinated brakeclean test it will wash right up............ I did a really heavy flake in both floors and clear coated them both..... The UCoat-it on is not slippy when wet and the quikcrete one is like GLASS..

I applied both coatings in the spring just different years.... It was around 70 - 80 degrees.

The only thing I can tell you is I did the UCoat-it first and it was quite expensive to do the garage and porch..... My shop is QUITE a bit larger than the other area (2x or 3x)... I did the floor in their for about the same as the amount of money. What was I thinking is the only thing I can say looking back.... It is going to cost me a bunch more to get the quikcrete crap up and then recoat it with UCoat-it....

Any pics of the UCoat-it at your place? I would like to see how that product turned out.

I used Rust-Oleum EpoxyShield. I had to re-coat it after the first 2 years as it started lifting in a few spots. I Re-coated it and then used the Pro-Grade Clearcoat. So far, so good after 2 years. The Pro-Grade is MUCH harder than the std stuff.

My truck parks outside. I believe it might be a problem if I came in from the working out side with rocks stuck in the tires and drove over the floor. But the car tires have not caused any harm. Initially we were concerned that depressions formed where we parked and we decided to place 18" carpet squares where our wheels would be. Later we found that the depressions popped out and no harm was done.

I went with this option because I really did not want to deal with coating that would chip or peel off then have to be scraped off and replaced. I had tried painted floors in the past and trying to refinish a painted garage floor is no fun.

I got the idea from this garage

abcd0053-120.jpg

They used 12" black and white tiles. Laying out the tiles takes longer and occasionally a tire will twist or lift a tire. They keep boxes of both colors on hand to replace such tiles.

My floor is 12 foot wide loose lay vinyl. There is a seam where it is glued together in the middle. The sides are clamped to the floor underneath floor boards. It does not lift, if it did it would fall right back in place.

I have driven into the garage with track tires (Victoracers) fresh from a 60 mile drive, and the with the 285s seen in the stack after making a triple digit sprint and ducking into the garage hoping no one noticed. After 4 years of driving in and out of the garage and completing many wood working projects the floor has held up great.
