Another Boring "i Love My 4x4 G80 Truck" Thread

I now have an even deeper love for my silverado after all the snow in Pittsburgh we got. As some of you have seen or may have experienced, last weekend we got about 2 feet of snow, actually about 26 inches where I live. I had to venture to work the morning of the snow and came out to the back of my truck being plowed in with snow higher then my tailgate (and mind you I have a 2" rear leveling kit). So I decided well.. I'll shovel a path to my drivers door and hold on tight!! Well after going reverse and forward about 5 times, I finally fought my way through this near 5 foot wall of snow (keep in mind im still sporting a set of half bald garbage duller's. After I get to work, they notify me that we're not working today lol, so I decided to head to my fiance's house. Her neighborhood hadn't been even slightly touched yet, still a fresh un-driven on 2+ feet of snow. The good old silverado kept up beautiful and plowed right through in 4x4 like I was on dry pavement.

Fast forward a few hours, I'm food shopping and the cell rings, it's my dad. He was trying to leave his house and backed over a railroad tie and got his xterra severely stuck. (the top of his driveway is lined with railroad ties). He's always the one bragging to me how "great" his xterra is in 4x4 and how he never gets stuck, so needless to say, I jumped all over the opportunity and made fun of him. So he says, can you come pull me out, I have a tow strap waiting. Even though he lives almost an hour from me, I picked up my fiance and we hit the road. Good old 279 and 79 coming out of Pittsburgh were a shittin mess, but we made it. Next up is the best part, his driveway is about 500 feet long and damn near straight up gravel hill, it's hard to walk up the damn thing in the summer let alone snow. It's 2 feet of fresh snow, completely un-touched. Barely any room at the bottom of the driveway, I jump out and shovel a little bit just so I had room for a running start. Put it in 4x4 hi, trainy in 1st, told the fiance to hold tight. After 6 trys, I finally blasted my way up his driveway.

After realizing the tow strap was too long and I had no room to move, my dad decided to wrap the tow strap around my hitch a few times so I had room to go when I yanked him out, well the tow strap quickly snapped and he was still stuck. So next, I took what was left of the tow strap and made a double knot, one small tap of the gas pedal with the xterra was out, silverado 1, xterra 0. But wait, it get's better....

After I got dad pulled out, he had know where to move accept go down the driveway. So he goes down, then I do so I could go home. He decides he's gonna get back up the driveway and park it. Well after "14" trys, the xterra fails once again and he can't get past the halfway point of the driveway, he says F it, I'm just gonna park it here, I'll call a plow in the morning to clean the driveway. I say great, cya dad, have a great night. So I go down the street and turn around to go home, come back to his house only to see the xterra once again stuck SIDEWAYS at the bottom of the driveway, all I could do was laugh, he tried it again after I pulled away and totally lost control. Once more, the silverado towed him out, he gave up and parked the damn thing. The next morning a baco came and cleaned his driveway haha.

And as for G80, now that my fiance's street is clean, it's still almost a one-lane street. So when i go there, I park the right side of my truck in a BIG 3 foot snow bank. I just tap the gas a little bit so the G80 locks, and walk right out in 2wd, God I love this G80!!

Moral of the story, I love my Silverado, and my dad needs to buy american next time!!!

Is that a cool thing or what? Tap the throttle til the G80 locks.....I did the exact same thing the other day and walked out of a very snowy driveway in 2wd....in Texas no less!

Yep...best locker I've ever had. And as for the handling of snow...you got me beat....I was only facing 18" banks here, but it's good to know I can handle a lot more if I have to. Made me want to drive back to Ruidoso for a weekend and really play!

You'll love the G80 until it blows up and then you'll be cursing the $1600 repair bill.

Nawww....got a real good friend who is a mechanic and has his own shop. All I have to buy is parts, we have a good trade out going.

To the guy who towed 7000 pounds up and down hills....I'm surprised your tranny lasted that long....that's what I call ABUSE! Hope you replaced it with a 4L80!

Come on now, what they replace the whole rear axle and leaf springs?

A friend of mine had a open diff and he went to the G80 the total bill was 650 bucks with labor and the G80.

Just about. It jacked alot of things up, including the axles. I had the chance to see the thing with the cover off. I was surprised I could still drive to the repair center when it blew up. It was only binding and making horrible noises when I turned.

What a waste of money! Way better options out there...

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
