There are kits out there...you need a 3" body lift to make up space as the 2500 and 3500 frame rails are 1.5" taller and they have a larger body spacer from the factory.

I have heard guys say it cost in the area of 1500 bucks to install for all the adapters body lift and reprogramming the ECM, plus cost of trans.

Better option is to go with a mildly built 4L80E. They can handle 600ft-lbs with the addition of a shift kit and new clutch packs.

Or be a real man and put an NV4500 in there...basically a 5-speed version of the old SM465 from back in the old square bodies, lovingly called the "RockCrusher". Its an almost indestructible trans and needs much less modification to fit in there.

The New Venture Gear (marriage of GM/Muncie and Mopar/New Process) NV4500 is a great transmission (I put one in my 1980 CJ-7) but it is not really like the GM/Muncie SM465 at all. The closest cousin to the NV4500 is the New Process NP4500 4 speed from 70's Dodge trucks. Even then, there is not much they have in common.

BTW, only the Muncie M22 produced from 1965-1974 (thereabouts) is known as the "Rock Crusher".

To the OP:

Allison auto is a great transmission if mated to the right engine/vehicle. There are several other better choices for an automatic in your 1/2 ton. Even though it sounds like you already have the tranny or can get it for a good price. My guess is that you excited about the thought of another gear. If so, a 6L80 or 6L90 is a better choice. Then you would have 2 extra gears! It will cost you a lot less money than trying to fit this square peg in a round hole. As others have said, physically, there are many costly and complicated challenges. Add the electronic requirements and this will get expensive !!
