smart move by GM imo....this is a voluntary recall for basically a non-issue, but its portraying GM as a "consumer first" company which they'll be able to capitalize on with the current media attention

Bingo. Better to do this while all the attention is on Toyota, people will barely notice this.

on the contrary.. i think they actually want people to notice this.

just read some of the quotes from GM in the various articles:

"While these vehicles are safe to drive because the drivers can still steer the vehicle, this measure is being taken out of concern dor our customers" (sorry cant post link while on my phone)

so few vehicles are affected and seriously its like recalling power steering belts that "may fail after 100k miles".... i think this is more of a marketing ploy by GM to win over more consumers who are dealing with dangerous recalls that were seemingly "swept under the rug" by the other manufacturer...

You're assuming people will read past the headline of "GM to Recall 1.3M Compacts for Steering Problem"...and if they do, you're assuming our "out for blood" media will even mention that it's voluntary.

.......good point :D

I forget sometimes that the average American doesn't "read" news anymore. Rather, they browse the titles in "Google News" and make up the rest of the story in their head based on what the title says

Hence why I said what I did. The media is so busy shouting about Toyota right now that they're not going to scream as loud as usual about a GM recall.

For those who DO pay closer attention though, you're right GM is going to milk this for all they can get.
