Hey guys I can't seem to find a difinitive answer to this. I just changed my rear diff fluid at 2000 miles with some amsoil 75w-90 synthetic. From what I've read the front diff is the same fluid and a little over 2 quarts? The real question is what fluid the transfer case takes. I got Low Viscosity Synthetic ATF from the amsoil web site for my truck, which would be the same fluid for the tranny (6L90). Is this correct? Thanks a lot for the help. ALso would you change the tranny fluid now also? I'm just doing some cheap preventative maintenance to get the wear metals out. THanks!!!

Derek

ps the truck is 2009 gmc 2500HD 6.0L electronic 4x4 WITHOUT auto and the 6L90 6 speed HD tranny!

Yes, the front fluid is the same and will take around 2qts for the front differential. The transfer case takes the ATL fluid.

You can change out the transmission fluid now if you want. It will help in getting all the wear metals out from the factory fill.

It is your truck. Preventative maintenance is a good thing. Never hurts to be on top of it.

Thank you! Yeah the truck is mine, it is the first Brand new one I have bought so I'm all over the preventative maintenance!! so, just so its clear to me, the amsoil Low Viscosity Synthetic ATF will be the right fluid for the tranny AND the transfer case? thanks again for the response

Also, any idea how many quarts the tranny will take? I know the total fill is like 12.5 quarts but I'm not sure if I need all of that....and is there a drain plug on these new trannies or will I need to drop the pan. Thanks

The ATL is the correct fluid for both. The 12.5 is for a total fill. If you just drain the transmission by dropping the pan it will take 6.5qts of fluid. I don't know if your truck has a drain plug on the transmission. Hopefully someone on here with the same vehicle will chime in and let you know.

thank you, I just looked and it looks like I have to drop the pan like usual.

One more quick question I promise haha,

when dropping the tranny pan for the change, is the gasket on the 4l90 reuseable or do I need to buy a new one? thanks!

Not sure on the newer models. If you have to drop the pan to drain the fluid I would go ahead and change the filter. Heck you are there anyway. A new gasket will come with the new filter.

is the filter an easy swap or do you need special tools?

If that trans is like all the other older trans out there you just pull down the old one and push in the new one.

Be sure to thoroughly clean out your pan before you put it back up...there will be a lot of grey shyte in there from brake in. I use non chlorinated Brake clean to clean just about everything...but Varsol works well too.

call the dealer about the pan gasket(parts dept)

check owners manual for quantities and oil types,

tranny oil does not need to be changed ,your applying clutch packs from oil pressure behind its piston, the oil does not get combustion fumes to change its lubing quaulity,I'm a big fan of changing engine oil early but seriously the tranny can be left alone and change it at its scheduled milage/time.

to be honest, I was changing it because It seemed like thats what I should do. But I understand your point and should probably save the money...

In the 07-up NBS transfer case the fluid is Dex VI in all of them auto or otherwise.

Leave the trans alone. The factory Dex VI should be good for 100k under normal use. Changing it early puts more dirt in the trans as well as opens up the chance for the pan to leak.
