What Problems Have You Had With Your Gmt-900 After 36,000 Miles?

Just curious what problems people on here have had with their GMT-900's after the bumper to bumper warranty ran up? I'm at 22,000 miles in less than 9 months and I have had a few issues, I'm just scared of repair costs out of warranty. I know we have the 100,000 mile warranty on the drivetrain but I'm worried about the electronics, suspension, ect. Does anyone wish they had gone with an extended warranty?

IMO, extended warranty's are a waste of money. If you just set aside that extra money every month that you would be paying into an extended warranty. You would have more than enough money to cover any expenses that may come up!

I agree, but only on a vehicle that you bought new and know exactly what it's been through. My warranty has paid for itself almost twice over and it isn't even half over yet. Who knew GM would want abut $400 per side for the stock exhaust manifolds

At around 34k miles, my fuel sending unit was acting up sporadically. Wasn't often enough for the dealership to catch it at the time it was giving bad readings, but I got it documented that it was doint it. Around 37k miles, it shot craps. Extended warranty covered it - no problemo.

66,000 and no problems! I wouldn't bother, unless you really feel it necessary.

46K to date and the ONLY issue has been with Onstar, not hardware related just programing.

Last summer I was towing a trailer from Las Vegas to Portland, OR. It was approx 3500 lbs. At the beginning of the trip my truck had approx 34000 miles on it.

 

200 miles outside LV the thing started acting up. Like it was starving for fuel or something. Check engine light came on, etc. I pulled over and hit the onstar button so they could pull the codes. They said it was a "Fuel Delivery System Malfuction" and should get it to a dealer asap.

 

I decided to keep on going. It kept doing this to me for the whole trip. It seemed like every time the engine was really working hard (I.E. above 3500 RPMs) is when it would do it. Essentially, every time I tried to climb a hill. It seemed like the AFM was kicking in when it wasn't supposed to be. Not sure if that is what was going on - but that's what it seemed like.

 

Long story short, the dealer couldn't figure it out. The check engine light would never come on when I needed it to (basically at the dealer) and now the truck is out of warranty.

 

To get to your point - if this truck weren't leased and going away this summer, I would have bought the warranty in a heartbeat. I've had the tranny go out which, needless to say, would have been very costly, and now this.

 

IMO - it is worth it. This issue seems like something that could end up being very expensive down the road and I would rather not have to come out of pocket to pay for it to be fixed. Perhaps if it didn't have all of this computer crap integrated with the engine, I wouldn't be so worried.

Keep in mind that if the problem was documented before the 3yr/36k mark it would still be covered under the factory warranty. If they changed you a deductible on the extended warranty you got hosed.

Remeber that the transmission would be coverd for 5yr/100k miles................... The extended protection plan covers things like windows motors, heated seats, stereo, etc.......

My 08 with 27,000 mi. has been back to the dealer (non-recall) mainly for various oil leaks. The oil cooler gasket and oil pan gasket were both replaced due to leaks. The power steering rack was also replaced because it was leaking which would have been really expensive out of pocket. Other than that, no troubles with anything else. (other than the AFM vibration which was cured by diablosport)

 

I did buy the Major Gaurd extended warranty when I bought the truck and it is covered bumper to bumper with no deductible to 72,150 mi. or out to January 2014 whichever comes first. I feel like I may have made a mistake buying the Ext. Warranty up front because I'm double covered for 36,000 mi. but it was also much cheaper to purchase at that time. Would I buy another extended warranty? Probably not... I tend to agree with others here that if you set aside the money you would use to buy the warranty and set up a repair fund for major stuff, you will be money ahead in the long run. Usually if there is a defect with the truck, it will have shown up during the factory coverage period.

A very good point. I just remember reading about them copping out of warranty work because something doesn't "directly affect" the drivetrain...or something like that.

we have a fleet of gmt900's this is what we are replacing- brakes,ball joints,shocks and struts,front hubs,o2 sensors. my personel truck's steering wheel radio controls are acting up.

How many miles are on these things? O2 sensors going out? I don't know if I've seen anyone on here that's had O2 sensor issues.

 

My shocks were shot around 15K I let them go until about 20K or so. Brakes were wearing a little funny so I replaced those around 25K. Other than that, no problems.
