Trans Fluid

Like the title says its time to change my fluids. Trans, transfer case, and rearend gears. I would normally push amsoil all the way but my truck didnt like their oil all that much so I am second guessing replacing everything with it. So what should I use.

Tranny ?

Transfer case (electronic one with auto4)

rearend (8.5 with G80)

For the transfer case, I would use only the GM stuff in the small bottles. I'm not a fan of Amsoil, but they do make suitable replacement fluids for the trans and front and rear diffs. Your choice there.

Dexron XI in mine. It's full synthethic and recommended by GM for all vehicles that came with either Dexron III or Dexron VI.

It's probably what's in your new Camaro

I always had good experiences with Mobil 1 gear oil in rear diff, and Redline synthetics for everything else (front diff, transfer case, transmission, Water Wetter coolant additive).

If you contact Redline they will tell you exactly what to use for each. I think it is the MTL for the transfer case.

DEXRON VI is made by many companies licensed by GM. Valvoline makes a full synthetic. Most others, including Mobil 1, are syn blend.

GM has strict standards for DEX VI, so any brand should do the trick. I personally use the full syn Valvoline. I am skeptical without any real data that the multi-use synthetics can satisfy multiple standards at the same time. I realize that it is not cost effective for the smaller companies to pay the license fees for Mercon or Dexron, but for the transmission, I am sticking with a GM certified and licensed fluid.

Don,

Your a wealth of usefull articles. Thanks!

I think I will use the valvoline in the trans, and mobil1 in the rearend. Now what about the transfer case? Do I have to go to the stealer and pay through the nose for their stuff?

Well according to some I'm a little slow but I get the job done. Now if I could just learn how to stop. (dang drum brakes)

Also Amsoil doesn't have a Dexron VI fluid because they claim it's to expensive, my thoughts are, they know it won't pass the testing so they don't bother. Their site just says you can use it for Dexron VI applications, but there is nowhere that it actually says certified. I just stay away from that stuff.

I've been trying to find Mobil 1 Dexron VI for a couple of years now. No one seems to know if it's coming out or not.

Mobil Dexron VI ATF along with Valvoline Dexron VI will work well. Mobil 1 75w-90 for front and rear diffs will be just fine.
