more than likely its sticky lifters.

Toss a quart of Auto trans fluid in the oil about 1 tank of fuel before you change your oil...(approx 500miles or so before). The heavy detergents in the ATF will brake up sludge and carbon deposits in the oil and clean everything out.

Aiden (nytemare) ... I am going to take your advice in the next couple of weeks here for my 97 5.7L (219,000 km) ... as I am getting to be due for an oil change ... and the lifter ticking is getting to be a regular thing on startup... it goes away after driving about a block, but it would be nice to know the sludge and carbon are gone from that part of the engine..

Rislone is an awesome product...but for the most part, ATF is cheaper and does a better job IMO.

I like using Rislone on new engines that I just cant get the lifters to stop ticking, even after a brake in cycle with GM EOS.

Oh yeah, that reminds me, get a bottle of GM EOS (Engine Oil Supplement) and toss it in with the new oil. You can keep it in there for the full 3000miles.

Just make sure you don't drive like a maniac with the ATF in there. It has good lubricating properties, but its not oil. Your fine to drive on the highway, and everything else, just don't do any full throttle runs.

And yeah Rod, you will definitely benefit from it. Its much easier on the engine too than a flush as it wont strip the bearings, cylinder walls etc of lube to do the cleaning job. With that much mileage on the engine though, keep an eye on your tailpipe, the moment you see more than a slight puff of blue get the oil drained out. The ATF will thin the oil a little and if you have much wear on the cylinder walls you will get a little blue out the exhaust.
