Moonroof Installation?

Recommended Posts

Does it exist for the Silverado? I've exhausted all search options, and just can't seem to find it.

I live in the WNY area, so that might have something to do with it?

Any other thoughts/opinions on the subject?

Thanks.

That would probably cost a fortune. I know there's NO WAY I'd let somebody make a hole in my roof that big. There's just too much that I'd be worried about going wrong (leaks, wind noise, body flex, ect..) I almost cried when I put on some marker lights.

I thought that myself (about the leaks and wind noise), but I see it being done to a lot of vehicles.

I was just curious.

Thanks.

do you think even a factory Gm moonroof installed by a dealer would have the same worries? i'm curious because this is something i would like to have in my next truck but they seem hard to come by

I really like the factory moonroof. Personally I would try to trade for a truck with a moonroof instead retrofitting. Autotrader has an advanced search feature that would let you search for trucks with moonroofs.

like said above, a good shop can do it.

check with your local dealership. Around here at least it's not uncommon for someone that wants to add a moonroof/ sunroof to have the dealership set it up. I know someone that had a Wabasto brand roof installed and said the install actually looked better than the factory style.

check with them to find a dealer:

I have been meaning to do mine @ Classic Soft Trim. They are very reputable not only here but in the auto industry in general.

The problem with these trucks is that the roof sheet metal is really thin. Trucks with factory sunroofs have some additional reinforcement in the roof. Whereas it is not diffcult to install a manually operated flip up roof, it would be much more challenging and expensive to get a factory look power sliding sunroof installation done. There are shops that do it, but it is not cheap, and not worth the potential problems in my opinion. For me it is either a factory installation or nothing. For proper sunroof trough draining, there need to be drainage tubes provided in each corner with proper discharge points, and I am not sure how aftermarket installers handle that.

If I remember correctly, a power sliding sunroof aftermarket installation for a car cost about $ 1,200 several years ago.

I honestly dont think they do handle the drainage. Rather they have it run off the top of the vehicle:

The above link really gives an idea of how the install would go and what modifications would take place...

Aftermarket power installs include drains just a like a factory roof, from the unit and down the pillars or otherwise, typically. Depends on the model & vehicle. Pretty much all exactly the same as a factory unit, but the hole cut after.

Extremely common now, even when don't realize it, and shops everywhere that install the Webasto, Solaire, ASC, etc. brand units.

This is a Malibu, but a good example post install with a Webasto unit:

There is no way to install the "factory" moonroof after the fact. The roof panel is stamped differently in the plant. Anything the dealer installs will be an aftermarket product like the other posts are talking about. In my experience, most dealers will be able to hack in an aftermarket roof for ~ $1200.

I don't really know for sure about any of this but I always thought the roof panel on NNBS crews cabs was the same with or without a moonroof. If you notice the ribs in the roof extend the length of the roof near the outside but anly about 3/4 of the way in the center. I always assumed this was to accomodate the cutout for a moonroof from the factory.

NO WAY NO HOW. I would not do that. If it came with it yeah I would be ok. But retrofitting it in HECKKKKKK NOOOO. Even if the dealer retrofits a OE replacement in I would be skid-dish about them cutting a HOLE in the roof.

It is your water leak after all so do what ever you feel pressed to do.

But If I HAD TO HAVE ONE.... I would trade trucks.
