Gm Needs To Design A Different Limited Slip!

Well it might be just bad luck on my part but the third time is the kicker for me. My last truck had a G80, I blew that thing up in no time left me stranded....twice. Once was warranty the next time I put it a Detroit locker problem solved. Now yesterday I was driving one of the work trucks that I frequently drive, 2007 2500 4x4 6.0/4l80 with 4:10's and the famous blow up special G80. I was moving our work trailer, loaded with portable machining tools. Roughly 6000 lbs. Not that much really, kinda going thru a little bit of mud in the mine. Was just driving merrily along by no means bag driving it. Went around a corner. Heard a BANG hop skip jump LOL. Then loud screetching noises. So we checked it out pulled the cap off, lots of oil. No water. Just a bunch of mulched up metal/clutch. Yet another blown up G80....gm really has to do something about that....3rd one I've roasted. Glad I'm not paying for this one.

I am leaning towards operator error :P

How much (often) did you tow with that truck? Was the rear diff fluid ever changed? There is probably more going on that just to blame the G80 itself

I go along with operator error. The G80 is a Eaton product and works just fine as long as its not abused. My 2000 has 255K and hasn't failed yet.

actually, the G80 realy is that bad for people that actually use it... I have it in my current truck and I'm terrified of it breaking. And for the record, the G80 is made by Eaton.

I had a friend with one in a 2000 1/2 ton that killed two. My last truck I had a Eaton LSD (aftermarket), which is a different design. It provided adequate traction and good street maners.

trucks got 65k kms on it, serviced every twenty. It's a fleet truck man, probably towed a half a dozen times....? Does that matter? Ur sayin you can't tow too much with a 3/4 ton or you'll blow up ur rear end??? I don't understand what you are asking here....I'll add one more thing that truck is used as my teams highway truck we use a ford for the mine but it's getting serviced. We had to use the chev. And by no means were we baggin this truck.... My own truck, I blew up 2 in one year now have a Detroit for 3 years no issues. Don't get me wrong the g80 works but if you ACTUALLY use it. It's probly gonna screw the pootch.

well you must have really put that truck to work. I know they are eaton, but it's not the same. It's a cheap design

I work my trucks and haven't grenaded one yet either.... in a 14 bolt at least. I work in Alberta's lovely oil field and my company trucks are always heavy. Not that I am sticking up for the design because I find it utterly useless 90% of the time. I have had quite a few in 10 bolts quit working, but never spit any parts out. My 14 bolt ones always work...... well as well as they work in the first place. In my personal truck right now I am ditching the Gov Bomb in it's 10 bolt for either a gear or clutch operated LSD.

IMO the G80 is the perfect tool for a mix of street/light off roading. It serves its purpose great. I have had to trucks with it now and have never had a issue. The last truck I beat on a little more, but this truck has been used to pull trees and stumps out of the woods and the G80 has done its job. I guess I got a good one? and so have many other people! If you use it like its a hardcore off roading diff you will kill it. You have to understand what it is in order to not kill it. if you are hard on the gas when your wheels strart spinning you will blow it, you have to give it time to kick in then get after it.

Does not sound like any improvements have been made to the G80 since 1999. How sad. After having one blow up on my old 99 at 90,000 miles and $1600 later I was hopeful that the quality of the product had improved, and was hopeful that it would be a more tougher design for the Heavy Duty applications but now I'm going to be worried that the G80 will go to hell on my 08 2500. No it does not get abused. no my 99 did not get abused either.

I agree, for what 90-95% of people use the trucks and SUVs for, the G80 is great. If you are doing heavy off-roading, you are probably need some kind of air-locker type system that can be controlled by the driver. For me, the combination of traction control and the G80 works, especially when compared to the TC only setups in the other brand trucks and SUVs.

You can choose to not check the G80 box when you buy the truck and put in a stronger aftermarket LSD or locker.

Man...we weren't doing "heavy off roading" lol. I figure a 3/4 ton should be able to take a littleabuse...and another thing I never said they didn't work. I'm just bitching lol. Just makes me mad, you use a truck like a truck and it breaks. What ever happened to a real truck??? I had an 84 3/4 ton with 350/th400, I beat the living snot out of that truck nothing would break...I wish chevy still made a truck like that. That would be awesome.

Yeah the G80 Sucks, does not last under any offroad use, for street trucks it may be fine but I hunt out of mine and in the mud it only lasted 20K miles or so in my 03 Sierra, now my 08 has 46K and it still works but that truck has never been off pavement for the most part.

What REALLY sucks is that you have to change the carrier in order to put a REAL locker in.

The G80 is for street trucks that never see any abuse or offroad driving.

no it doesnt matter i was just saying because of maintenance (fluid change after 1st tow, etc.) and fleet vehicles arent maintained like a personal vehicle

i used mine in my 2000, sounded like a gernade going off a few times but worked flawlessly. my 08 tahoe 2wd G80 is used on days like today, rain/sleet. new truck not enough miles, i know it is quieter than my 2000 but works the same

the operay\tor error thing was a joke hence
