6.2l Exhaust Tip Is Straight Because?

Recommended Posts

Anybody know why GM decided to put the 6.2L exhaust straight out the back instead of the side like most anything else as of late? Just always thought it was curious. Thought you guys might know why. I got one coming and I was wanting to put the chrome GM tip on it but then I saw it was out the back. They do still have a tip though. Looks sort of funny cause it is so short. At least the pictures make it seem that way.

I added the gm tip to mine. What I dont like it it being so close to the bumper, so I have the tip coming out a bit. I would think this would cause it to become discolored or make it start rusting faster.

Well, as far as performance, less restrictive exhaust path with one less bend. But it could also be for identification, you know it has to be the 6.2 just by seeing the exhaust.

My guess.... Six Sigma Lean manufacturing. With more and more trucks coming with the 6.2L they probably wanted a way easily identifying the difference between the 6.2L and the 5.3/4.8 exhaust. Since they're routed the same, they'll look similar except for the added bend for the side exit 5.3/4.8.

Granted this is just an assumption on my part... but i think its more likely than some sort of performance or aesthetics benefit

I opted for the "invisible" tailpipe on my truck

I know the 6.0 is gone now in the 1500's but my factory exit was straight out the rear. And really the only visible sign you have the 6.2 is the straight out the rear exit

lol would you prefer the trumpet the duramax gets?

my buddy had me laughing so hard one day while we were driving. we saw a new D-max and he said "look at that....they put Elmer Fudd's gun on the exuast pipe"

How do you guys like the 6.2 ? Do you have the max tow package or just the engine ? On the fence about one...concerned about towing a 25ft snowmobile trailer in sh*ty weather, on bad roads, etc and the short wheel base having issues with the trailer pushing.

Have a 2010 2500 CCSB LTZ with the duramax, but just don't tow anything heavy besides the above trailer... and don't put any where near the miles I used to.... so it's hard to justify the diesel now.............

Hate it, to much fun to drive  I dont have the NHT towing pkg. Should be sufficient for the type of boat I plan on getting this yr or next.

They didn't want anyone to hear the 6.0-6.2 liters drive by and be in AFM mode because they sound like crap outside the truck?:cool:

The sound exits the rear of the truck so people standing on the edge of the road don't hear the drone.

Try again, the 6.2 doesnt have afm

My guess would be so the 6.2 could easily be visually identified by the exhaust configuration. I'm personally gonna have mine moved to behind the rear wheel so I can use my hitch hauler without heat blasting the coolers I put on it!

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
