How To Bypass A Integrated Brake Controller In A 2009 Chev 3500

Just bought a new 2009 chevy 3500 hd. It has a integrated brake controller and i was told today that it would not work with my electric over hydraulic disc brake trailers and that i have to bypass the ibc and install a new aftermarket brake controller. Does anybody know what I have to do to do this. Went to service mgr at dealership and they didnt have any answers for me. Please help!

You can bypass it by disconnecting the wire on the post under the hood and hooking up the one for aftermarket controller. But you may not need to depending on the brand of brakes you have. Also many have fooled their systems by adding a couple of brake magenets to the circuit to fool the ITBC into thinking there are brakes attached.

I have a PDF on this, I will search for it.

I talked with a trailer dealer today and they wouldnt give me any info on how to do this. They wanted me to bring it in and pay them to do it.

I can't find the document from GM about this but this is what I recall.

The factory blunt cut wires for an aftermarket controller are in the vehicle as well. You will find them under the dash.

If you take a look at this manual, page A-53 GM Upfitters Electric Manual It gives the directions on installing an aftermarket controller. Since you have the ITBC as I remember you will first remove the wire from the power post for the ITBC and install the wire for the aftermarket controller harness.

Before you going tossing the factory harness away though I really think you should look at options on making it work. Titan is making an adapter for there units that allows it to work with the ITBC. I have also heard of many people having great success by adding a couple of $20 electric brake magnets to the system. This fools the ITBC into thinking that there are brakes attached so it will function correctly.

I would think just simply disconnecting the wire off the underhood fuse block would do the trick. I have a pic on how the wiring for a brake controller is on my '07 Silverado (non-integrated).

I would double check that the integrated controller gets power from this same source. Something tells me GM would hide that and not make it that easily accessible to the consumer - just how they operate today.

If it is in this location, bonus - easy fix.
