Check your glovebox for the following RPO Codes

KC4 - Engine Oil Cooling System

KNP - HD Aux Trans Cooling System

Z82 HD Trailering Equipment (Not the cooling pkg)

The factory HD tow package always includes the auxiliary transmission cooler on full size pickups. Sounds like that salesman needs to learn a few things.

On page 4-52 it shows the chart. It should be the same on the GMC.

I think what you are looking for is the K5L package. I have the KNP and Z82 but not the KC4. Mine is a 4spd though, and the K5L may be specific to the 6spd.

I do know that according to the owners manual, you need the K5L to go beyond the 6200 pounds. With that said, you could add the extra cooler(s) and have the same truck I think, but I am not so sure law enforcement or court systems would consider you to be within legal towing limits. (doesn't make sense, but that seems to be the way the law works)

That is correct, I missed that at midnight last night :)

The camper salesman knew what he was talkin about

Really? Then why didn't he open the hood of the truck and verify that the aux cooler was there? It is mounted in front of the A/C condenser, in plain sight.

For GMT800 trucks all HD trailering package trucks had the aux cooler standard. Maybe GM, in their never ending penny pinching quest, has eliminated the standard transmission auxiliary cooler on the GMT900s. Still, this does not excuse not verifying it before I sell a new truck to someone.

How much do the travel trailers your looking at, or hoping to buy - weigh?

How much a truck is rated to tow is one consideration - - how well it will handle and stop are different discussions.

I have very limited towing experience, towing a 6,000 lb enclosed car hauler. I've towed it with a 2000 GMC Yukon XL, a 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab and now with a 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab. All with the factory heavy duty towing options. HUGE difference in handling and stopping when the trailer is behind the 2500HD.

Personally - With my limited experience {a few thousand miles of towing over the past couple years} I wouldn't want any trailer to weight much more than the truck itself, for other than very short trips with a 1/2 ton pickup. Adding an weight distributing and anti-sway trailer hitch while expensive - was well worth the money as well.

good luck,

trying to keep weight down, looking at 30' passport weighing in @5700 lbs dry weight and 30' cougar weighing in at 6400 lbs dry. i know it doesn't sound like much, but i have never hauled a travel trailer and really don't want to take trailer guys word for anything. i did find the cooler in front of the radiator, guessing this is the cooler for the transmission. just seems like there are so many options and so little explanations.

Well.... The numbers that the camper salesman gave mviator are only 100lbs off from the specs that ryan posted, unless im missing something. And yes the extra tranny cooler on the gmt900 is the same place as the gmt800
