Help With Tire Sizes And Offset

I am thinking about buying some wheels soon and I am not sure exactly what to look for. I would be replacing the factory 17x7.5" with 17x9" wheels. That seems simple enough but every wheel has different backspacing and offset. What would I need to run a 305/65/17 tire and not have it stick out of the fenders more than a couple of inches? The truck would have 3" of lift up front. I really don't want to end up with a bowleg truck.

Would 305/65/17 be too wide? Other than section width it is the same overall diameter as 285/70/17 tires.
