Yes, that is the regulator. If its bad it will cause hard starts and some black smoke from the exhaust. Be careful with the orings when you change it.

I replaced my fpr on my 01 suburban and I am still getting a hard start...I used the bwd brand regulator from advance autoparts....seems like it had a horse shoe ring that did not seem to fit on anything and plus the stock fpr had a black plastic ring which I was not sure if I needed to transfer it to the new fpr or not. And so I left it out...no leaks detected so far but I am still stumped by the hard starts. My suburban usually starts on the second try or if crank it for 5 or more seconds...I have replaced everything I can think of spark plugs, wires, cleaned fuel injectors run some seafoam and replaced knock sensors.... I hope its not the darn fuel pump!! :D

Hi;

When mine was bad the truck was hard to start and I had to give it some throttle to get it going. When it started there would be some black smoke from the exhaust and a rough idle for a short time. Make sure you don't damage the orings when you put the regulator in. Damaged orings can cause a very simular problem (go ahead, ask me how I know). I can't remember for sure but I think when I pulled the vaccum line off the regulator there was gas in the hose. If you have fuel in the vaccum line the regulator is bad.

You may want to check your Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor. With a scan tool check the IAT temperature.

If the reading is higher then it should be, compared to the engine temperature, hard starts are likely to occur.

My 2001 Tahoe did the exact same thing. It always took two turns of the key before it would crank. I first did the same as other and replace the fuel pressure regulator. That didn't work. It turned out being my fuel pump in the gas tank. Replaced it and she starts great.

Is the IAT the same thing as Air Charge Temp Sensor. That part is only about $6.00. Hell, I will just go and replace the darn thing and see if that solves it. I cannot replace the fuel pump at this time. From reading other posts on this forum about the fuel pump, it seems like there is some sort of valve that is unable to maintain fuel pressure in the fuel lines after the motor has been shut down and that is the cause of the hard starts. If nothing else I think I can live with the problem. Just hope these hard starts down wear down my starter
