Help Chosen Shocks

I put 2 inch torsion keys up front and 2 inch block in the back of my 2005 silverado crew cab 4x4 i dont know what kind of shocks to put on my stock ones are maxed out any ideas

First of all choosing not chosen. :happysad: I'd go with some ranchos made for something like a four in. lift, you can get em' from most discount auto parts places.

get some OE bilstein replacements. your upper control arm will hit the metal droop stop before you fully extend those shocks.

 

dont get shocks for a 4" lift or you'll blow them out if you hit a big bump or rut. you didnt "lift" your truck, you just raised the ride height... the suspension can compress just as far as stock; so if you put shocks on that have a "longer" compressed length than OE shocks, you'll ruin them with one good hit.

Well he said the shocks were topped out so I believed him. On my HD, my shocks top out about 1/4 in. before the upper control arms hit the stoppers on the frame. The ride is horrible when the shocks are topped out like that, so I just lowered it back down and leveled it by dropping the rear. But true, it should in theory hit the stoppers before topping out.

it does depend on which shocks came on the truck from the factory. my 2005 4x4 would top out juuuust before the UCA hit the stops and i noticed that all the z71s i worked on would hit the stops with room to spare.

 

most quality aftermarket shocks, like the bilsteins, have more travel than the lower end OE shocks.

 

if i remember correctly... the OE replacement 5100s for his truck are spec'd for 0-2" of increased ride height. so they'd be perfect for what he's looking for.

Ooooooh, that explains why my truck won't hit the stop, it's a z85 not a z71. I've always wondered why them things were there if it wouldn't hit em'. It has bilsteins on it now and it still won't hit the stops, I guess it could also be that it has a factory 2" body lift on it. Thanks.

the taller frame of the 2500hd (what people refer to as a factory bl) shouldnt affect the UCA range...

 

what model bilsteins are you running? would be interesting to look up their compressed/extended specs.

on a related note... i threw some OE replacement pro comp es3000 shocks on my 2005 in an attempt to soften up the ride. they too had more travel than my OE shocks and would allow my UCA to hit the stops

Part number 3704-01001223, I bought them off of partsgeek.com. I've had them for about 10,000 miles, and I think sooner or later I'm gonna throw me some rancho 5000s on there, unless you have a better suggestion. I myself, don't care too much for the bilsteins, but other people swear by them. I guess they didn't like it when I lowered the truck about two weeks ago. They've been bouncing ever since.

is that the parts geek part number? doesnt look like a bilstein #....

 

if the OP went with the bilsteins he'd need part number BE5-C153-H0 for the front which are specifically for 0-2.5" of increased ride height... and BE5-D147-H0 for the rear (unless he raised the rear a full 2", then the BE5-6647-H1 would work back there too)

 

ride quality is very subjective to personal preference. the bilsteins tend to be a bit firmer on the street than others like the monroe reflex.... theres lots of good shocks out there, not sure why bilsteins are so popular actually :happysad:

Thank you, someone that agrees with me, and yes that was the parts geek number, I was too lazy to look on the shock for a number, but I'll look. It's just so HOT out there today. :happysad:

    • Folks, Have a great new 2026 WT  (std cab, 2.7/4WD) w/base 40/20/40 mech adj bench "fake buckets"  (with lower and upper center console) heavy vinyl seats.  Overall the seats are very comfortable and the vinyl is heavy and appears less likely to 'split out'. Am very tall (6'5")  + a bad back/osteporosis/former hyperparathyroidism so ease/range of movement is a bit restricted.  The truck rides a bit high and I use a nerf step bar w/my left foot to step in, then I put right foot/leg in, drag my butt in  & get seated.  Worked fine in my 2018 RAM quadCab. But I end up dragging my butt over the left raised sidecushsion area of vinyl seat, and due to texture there's fair amount of traction on slide inward.  (ArmorAll didn't improve.) If the seat were even ~1/2" - 3/4" lower it'd be helpful, but base seats just have the forward/backward underseat bail and the side lever for tilt which really doesn't affect seat height.   I really don't want to 'de-puff' the left side sidecushion forming the  fake 'bucket'. I know one company sells 'seat elevator blocks':  but is there a simple way of lowering the height of the driver seat instead?   Thanks Bill W San Jose  
    • I have a basic 2026 1500 WT  (2.7L/4WD reg cab shorttbed). Comfy, generally happy with electronics/radio - but is there a way I can add switches to steering wheel right-side position (curr. empty) so I can adjust volume, push phone button to voice dial, etc? Bill W San Jose  
    • The curb weight on a 1 ton crew cab long bed is around 7k lbs.  Now, I don't know where you went to school but 9k is not more than 2x 7k lbs. More than 2x 7k lbs would be 14k+.   With that said, obviously yes you're going to feel a 9k lb trailer when slowing down.  I already said, when accelerating.  When changing lanes?  No.  But if you look at the context of what was quoted, the original person said, "after a mile or two..." which means that would be after the accelerating portion and you're driving a generally steady pace.  Please do learn to read and comprehend.
    • So I purchased the Range unit for my 2026 and I am seeing different locations suggested for the ECM . Can anyone confirm wither under hood, left side or right side or behind the wheelwell?
    • Like I've said before. Di and Carbon buildup is not that big of a concern. Engine had minimal buildup, and that engine was obviously not super well maintained. Do regular oil changes, and you're gtg as long as the rest of the truck lasts. Also, the High Pressure FP that people ****** about, but can't tell you why.  Now, I wish they'd trash the variable oil pump. No real world issues with them, but I'll gladly eat whatever miniscule MPG it's saving me in favor of more oil at all RPMs.    Curious to see his assessment of the 7.3 compared to the 6.6. I expect he'll praise the port inj, but from a structural standpoint, the 6.6 is as robust as any engine out there.    Not to take away from the 7.3. I feel it's equally as good as the 6.6.     As to heat on the rear cyls, I'd have to see numerous examples before I'd say it's an issue. Especially not knowing the history of that engine. For all is known, they could have blown a rad hose, and ran it hot, and the 2 rear cyls may be the first to get hot in a low coolant situation, but not be an issue aside from that.
