Jump Seat Storage Console Latch On Nbs...warning

Hi everyone, last week, I opened the center console/ arm rest storage and the latch felt wierd ( like no spring effect ) and when I closed it down, the latch came off, it broke. I looked at it and it's just a piece of plastic, oh well, it shouldn't be expensive so I went to the dealer to order another latch and I was shocked and stunned so is the parts guy when we found out that although it shows in the parts drawing as a separate part but it only comes as a complete center console back assembly for $375.00. The bottom cover of the armrest comes off by taking out 4 corner srews and the plastic latch is mounted with 2 screws and the latch depends on the spring of the plastic when it bends to open. I was really stunned when I found out that you have to buy the whole back rest to get the latch. Just another thing to show how genius GM engineers and GM quality.

Yup, the latch has been broken on my Father in law's 99 Silverado for about 7 or 8 years now. He said it can stay broken for the $400 the dealer wanted just for the parts.

What I do not understand is that changing this latch doesn't take more that 3 minutes, so why would it be not a service part.

look on the broken piece and see if there is a number, alot of times the individual parts have a number on them and when looked up it shows a single part that can be ordered. if you have a pic to post I might be able to help find the part number.

There is no numbers on it at all or any kind of writing. I looked at it caefully cause I glued it back together and it works for now, I don't know how long it will take before it breaks again.

Same problem here too. Mine broke a couple months ago. Some dealers said they could just sell the console lid (just the vinyl top) for like 110.

I just put a couple screws and rubber grommets so it can still flex and it works perfect. Its tighter now and doesn't have anymore play. And you cant see the screws so I'm happy and I don't have to worry about it breaking again.

If you can tell me about a junk yard that would take a console apart to give me a latch, I would jump on it immediately. They will sell you the whole console.

some of us are lucky enough to still have pick and pull yards nearby

Are you talking the hoop latch on the lid cover or the push button release bar (on the front

of console base)?

Both my 01 and 04 push button release bar broke and the lid wouldn't open. Both replaced

under warranty. At that time you had to replace the whole storage console as a unit at

$400 a pop.

Just had the latch replaced on my lower storage area lid. They covered it, no cost to me. Wonder why they didn't want to cover the upper storage latch? I guess velcro might be an option?

Sorry to hear about this. Most people these days have accepted that plastic parts appear in more places on their vehicle but would hope that these would be higher quality plastic parts.

Unfortunately, that is not the case many times. I keep waiting for my hood release to snap in half when I pull. It seems like it was contracted from the Dollar Store. I like my truck but am disappointed in the materials on some parts.

Same thing happened to my latch and now if you raise the jump seat all the stuff inside falls out into the back seat area. I never abused the latch part at all, it is just cheap...mind you not inexpensive, just built cheap....dealer quoted me $450 for console top, siad individual latch was not available separately!!! WHY!!!

I consider it to be a $2 piece of plastic and that is being generous. It is held on by a couple of screws and 5 min labor!!!

The dealer suggest I go to Pull-a Part, which I did...why I cannot explain....but I did. The first thing the guy asked me was the year of the truck (07, newest body style) and then he laughed at me. I went home and looked on eBay...now I am here!!

Will probably go look at the Fords next. I've had this one for four years now (bought in 2006 at this same time) and the replacement part is not available yet????? Give me a break!!!! Gotta love the bail outs and executive bonuses, guess that is what the $450 latch locks pay for!!
