i'm not to sure which holley it is.. sorry but i'm lookin at getting it from a friend of mine

will i notice a difference on my 81 4x4??

is the holley a better carb??

the quadrajet is 670 cfm only when it's wide open right??

i'm not much of a carb guy as i just recently got the truck again.. long story haha

looking for performance.. plus fuel mileage.. haha i know it's either or alot of the time

but performance i want more so

Quadrajets were only 750 or 800 cfm. Some computerized ones like the e4me were only about 630, because of emissions restrictions. I do not know if it will make much of a difference, putting that holley on there or not, but I doubt it will be substantial. If yours has wires running to it, then it might help, but if not, I wouldn't waste my money on a 670, maybe a 750 or 850, though. And fuel mileage, you can't beat a quadrajet on fuel mileage, just don't open the secondaries and they will have the best fuel mileage.

A quadrajet is the best solid carb you're going to get. Nothing runs better than a quadrajet, when it's tuned and clean.

just thought i'd throw this in there as well. had my Q-jet blueprnted by a guy in montrose co and it ROCKS!

The Q-jet is a good all around carb, but when you do alot of towing or off roading there are better options IMO. We have noticed better throttle response and MPG with a 500 cfm Edelbrock Thunder on a 350 when towing heavy. Our off road buggy runs a 670 Holley truck avenger on a 400 SBC, the Q-jet couldn't handle the jumps and slopes and flooded alot. We run a 750 Holley 3310 on our 454 dually and we have no issues with that carb either, It starts and pulls better than the Summit reman Q-jet we tried first.

All that being said, if you don't know how to read spark plugs or change jetting, and you don't have a "big" cam the Q-jet will be hard to beat.

We had a fleet of these trucks and the q jets we had were impossible to tune right. I have seen a few that ran great but none of ours did. The holley replacements were excellent and troublefree. Q jets are FM Carburetors. This means they work on the principle of Freakin' Magic.

If you want a good, solid, reliable carburetor, stick with the Quadrajet. Most reliable carb out there and can be made to run better than most if you know what you're doing. The only problem is, that they are getting old and worn out. There hasn't been one come from the factory since about 1988.

 

Almost any Holley sucks....unless you run only with your foot to the floor, then they're great.

 

Edelbrocks are my second choice...1405 is a 600cfm manual choke or get teh 1406 for the electric choke. That will be perfect for most, then buy yourself a $50 Strip Kit for it and read the owners manual and tune it in even better by playing around with jet size, needles and springs. I think you'll be surprised with a 600cfm Edelbrock.... If you think you need a bigger one a 1407 is 750cfm if I remember right. My buddy runs one of those on his hopped up 454 and it runs awesome, perfect fit.
