Dual Battery

I custom ordered my 08 and included the extra battery because the truck sits out in the parking lot on a hill every night while I'm at work--making for a very cold start!

When I traded to the 10, I had to find the closest match and it didn't include the extra battery . . .

Does anyone think it's actually necessary/helpful unless you live in, say, Alaska? lol.

I would agree with Jarod.....one real good battery will get the job done.

In my '02 YukonXL, I installed a 1000cca battery....even at -35c the truck would turn over just fine!

Now, if you wanted to run a couple of amps and subs, then an extra battery would come in handy.

Ah, so it's not really for starting--it's for "amps and subs", hahahaha! Good to know!

So, is the stock battery as good as the one you put in?

No...the original factory battery in my '02 was a 600cca. Up north here, I perfer something with more power.

As I needed a battery for my car, I took the one from the truck and used that, and put in a new 1000cca into the truck.

Never had a starting issue, no matter how cold it got.

Hmmm, I'll have to think about that--might be a good idea. Thanks!

In my HD i got the battery tray from the dealer for around 60 bucks and 2 1000 cca batteries for $180 and 16 or 18 ft of 1/0 ga battery cable which was pricey at $3 a foot but all you gotta do is remove the corner brace from the fire wall to the fender and with mine i had to cut off the tab where the brace bolts on to the firewall. its a tight squeeze but not hard at all but so well worth it. Especially running the plow and lights and everything in the winter. not a problem at all

So what do you do after you get the battery in place the negative and postive just connect to the negative and positive on the existing battery??

On gas motor Chevy-GMC's even with the second battery option, only one is used to start the truck. The second is only on line while the truck is running.

Correct, if you ordered a gasser your only starting with one battery anyway. The second runs all accessories and is included on the snow plow prep package to suplimnent the hydraulic pump and lights. I'm sure the FLA draw by a gas motor starter is less than the diesel. It doesn't mean that the 2 batteries are going to hold a charge better or crank the motor any "harder". They are wired in parallel, and deplete/charge equally. I know on a Duramax, if one loses a cell and goes bad you may as well change them both. The diesel motor just needs the extra oomph to overcome the higher compression, bigger starter, higher current draw.

I posted this on the OEM setup, as you can see they are connected differently depending on the RPO code:

no point, one good battery is suffient unless your running a microwave out of the cab.....live in -27 degree winters with the truck sitting all night and she starts fine...hell i have the oem ac delco battery and it still works like a dream after 6 cold harsh winters...

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
