C1500 shock recommendation

On a previous post, I learned my new Silverado 1500 can have a transmission cooler, frame mounted hitch, and heavier shocks installed to enable it to haul the same load as trucks that come with the facotory towing package. (Z85 package, I think)

I have already priced the transmission cooler and hitch.  My shocks are marked D2J, and are not blue, so I guess I need heavier shocks for towing the truck's max load.

So, what shocks do I need to buy and how much will they cost?  Do I just buy heavier rear shocks or do I need heavier front shocks too?  Is installation a do it yourself job?  I normally only change oil, plugs, alternator, filters, etc.  Thanks.

I assume you checked your RPO list for Z85, if it wasnt there, Z83 might have been there and that is the soft ride suspension. But not what you want. I am not sure if the shocks are different on the 2wds such as mounting. But changing shocks are easy, jus changed all four on my dads '91 K1500. We put Monroe Sensa tracs on the rear and wanted the same on the front but had to take them designed for a Z71. On the older models the Z71 shocks fit perfectly so I assume they were just stiffer! This was a 4x4 though, you might have a little trouble since yours is a 2wd. You could probably buy a Heavy Duty aftermarket shock for yours or get Z85 or Z71 shocks from the dealer. Z85 isnt the factory towing package, is just a firm ride; Increased payload package. Although mine is a Z85 it came with no hitch or anything. I got the factory hitch, harness, and all wires and installed it myself.

ALWAYS change shocks as a set (4).  Changing two would seriously affect your trucks handling characteristics.  That said, a good shock is the big yellow Monroe Gas Magnum (i think they still make them).  Probably around $40-$50 each (maybe a little less).  There are better (Bilstein / Edelbrock go for around $70 I think) and there are worse.   The rears are easy, the fronts less so, but still well within the realm of the average shade tree mechanic.

Thanks, I just checked and I have the Z83 package rather than the Z85 that allows for maximum towing capacity.

I had both the Edelbrocks and the Bilstein HD installed. Edelbrocks are stiffer and Bilsteins are cheaper. Basically your choice. I now have the Bilsteins cause the Edelbrocks were a little too stiff for me. Both are way better than stock. And you would see a tremendous difference if you change the tires too. Assuming, of course, that you still had the General crap that comes stock with the 2wds.
