Backup Beep

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, Just bought an 07 Sierra SLT. Love the truck to death, but one thing is driving me crazy. Whenever I shift into reverse the truck beeps like a dumptruck or motorhome or something. It's loud and obnoxious. There's nothing about it in the manual so I'm guessing it's probably an aftermarket thing? Just thought I'd see if anyone had some insight as to what it is, and how to shut it off.

Thanks for the help!

Does the rate of beeping change as you get closer to objects and is the sound only in the cab? If yes, then it's the backup warning sensor; a handy thing to have to keep from hitting anything.

Find the horn, cut the wires, cap them off (so they don't short out)

That's the easiest way to get rid of it. They're usually near the rear bumper, but it could be anywhere.

Now I don't know exactly how those horns are hooked up, but if I was to hook one up it would be hooked up to a relay that gets tripped when the truck is put into reverse, but then again I don't really understand all the electronics in vehicles.

The ones I've seen are hooked to the back-up lights to enable and to power to make the noise. The easiest place to get this signal is actually near the trailer connector (there's a wire for B/U lights and power in the same place!). With the engine off and the Ebrake set, put the shifter in reverse so it makes the noise, then go huntin' for the source of the noise with wirecutters in hand!

If it's not OEM and you think a previous owner did it themselves, try listening back by the backup lights themselves, outside the truck. If some guy just put something on his vehicle real quick it may be the beeping bulbs they sell online at places like JC Whitney et al. You replace your backup bulbs with ones that plug right in and a built-in speaker/beeper. No wiring etc. A 10 min annoyance that lasts for years. If the truck came from a fleet like a school district or local government fleet, it will probably have a much more elaborate system as others described before me. Some places have rules spelling out what type of speaker or horn, where it's mounted, the pitch and volume required etc. That may be a bit more work to remove.
