2003 GMC Sonoma CrewCab 4x4 - Possible issue

Every month or so while I'm driving into work I'll engage my 4x4 just to make sure everything is in working order. I generally drive about a mile and disengage the system and carry on with my commute to work. Well this morning I ran into an issue..

I pressed the 4WH button and it stated acting funny. The lights for both the 2WH and 4WH stated steady amber. (In normal operation the 4WH will blink for a few seconds and then you can feel it engage.) After 30 seconds or so both lamps for the 2WH and 4WH went out. After 5 minutes or so, the 2WH lamp decided to turn on again. At this point I tried to push the 4WH button again and nothing happened. Once I got to work I turned my truck off, waited a few minutes, fired it back up and still the same result. The 2WH lamp is the only thing lit.

Now my question is: Is this an indication of a failure in the 4x4 system or transfer case? "or" Has my 4WD Selector Switch gone bad? I called the local GM dealer and the switch is a $49 part however it's not a returnable item after you buy it. I'd hate to spend the money and find out it's a problem with 4x4 system itself. Well there's always eBay to resell it if i had to.

Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Quick Update: So I took my truck for a test drive, I dropped it in Neutral to test tthe 4WL.. Low and behold it engaged & disengaged with no problems. Still no luck with 4WH after successfully 4WL test.
