Carfax And My Hood

Recommended Posts

I bought my used '02 GMC earlier this year. Carfax was clean on it. Fast forward to today. We were getting some good t-storms here where I live in AZ. Kicks up some good mud so I took the kids out for a little spin. When we got home I started hosing it off. You should have seen the paint peeling off that hood! Looked like I was hitting it with a blaster. Underneath my crappy painted white hood is a Polo Green one.

The original window sticker was in the glove box, so I know it was white to begin with. The wrecks that could cause a hood to buckle boggle my mind but I'll never know for sure what has happened to it in the past. Nothing to do now but have it repainted, or maybe find a white one?

Carfax  can't be relied on as a be all, end all.

Jumping to conclusions?

The carfax can be clean and there still be repairs. It may not even be the original hood for all you know. You also don't really know the root cause of the failure.

x2 on the carfax. It only shows accidents and damage that was REPORTED. If the hood was smashed/damaged and the previous owner decided to buy a used one and paint it, it would never show up. Carfax is only good to know about title history, odometer reports, etc. Also carfax's "buyer protection - buy it back guarantee" only comes into effect if there was a "reported accident" that carfax didn't pick up, which would be very rare!

While I would be livid that it wasn't disclosed, it's what you guy when you buy used. I always buy used, so I know how this goes

Oh...And EVERYTHING buckles the hood. Ever seen a salvage hood? They're all "repairable". Not "ready to bolt on" like most other parts. :D

So it looks like a fresh coat of paint on the hood sounds more feasible than hunting down a "repairable" salvage hood. Good to know. How much should I expect to pay to just get a hood repainted?

Several hundred to do it right which is mostly in prep time labor. Obviously someone in the past did not and you will paying the price now.

Yeah...I'd say anywhere between 200 and 500 bones. White is pretty easy to match...So you might be able to get away without the blending thing.

Look around Craigslist. I see good hoods on there all the time. Might even find a good cowl hood for 2 or 3 hundred bucks
