To The Guys With The New 6 Speed Tranny. What Temps Are You Seeing?

my buddy has an 09 tahoe with the 5.3 and the 6 speed trans and consistently sees trans temps of 200+ on my 5.3 4 speed i see an average of 180. does the new trans just run hotter or might there be something wrong?

I've been averaging 170 during a summer in the 90s. I've got the stock towing trans cooler. Does he have a cooler? IF no cooler, 200 does not surprise me.

Same as Bish for me. 170° on the highway in the summer time, truck empty. Stock transmission cooler.

i just pulled an open 4 place snowmobile trailer w 6 wheelers on it and one in the bed yesterday. about 85 degrees out. no highway driving. all country. 190 was the highest i saw. mine has the cooler

The curb weight for a 2009 Tahoe is 5265 lbs. and for a 2009 Silverado CCSB 4x4 it's 4558 lbs. Maybe the extra weight of the SUV causes the trans to run hotter.

4558? Sounds a little light. I would guess the Tahoe and CC truck to way about the same.

my 4 speed climbs to 210 easily if I go up hill or under stress drive it during the summer, also have stock cooler

well i don't know about the cooler. i will find out. the tahoe is a state issued vehicle (police package) so i don't know the particular options in it. i will check for the mini cooler on it next time i see it. he says when he pushes it he gets as high as 230 degrees which to me and him seems high but the garage says it is ok and normal.

Edmunds.com lists the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 CCSB 4x4 as having a curb weight of 4558 lbs.

is that really the weight of a 2009 CCSB? my 2001 ext cab shorty is 4905lbs......

I towed an enclosed cargo trailer (3600 gross loaded) in 90° temps and my tranny temp never went over 179°.

My 2010 4WD EC 6.5 bed with the 5.3 comes in at 5286 lbs. according to Edmunds. Maybe I need to lose some weight to help the fuel economy and performance...

2010 silverado ec 6.5 4x4 5.3 w/ 6 spd with heavy duty towing pckg(trans cooler) and air dam removed

Normal driving in 100* summers, ~170*

stop and go traffic for 110 miles on I95 going to Williamsburg, ~195

I70/I68/I79 going through western MD and WVA up those lomg steep hills at 75mph in 60* temp with a 20mph headwind, ~150-160.

200 I could see if its a rare occasion like a lot of traffic, 230 I would have stopped to let the trans cool down. Something prolly ain't right. Is he running with 4x4 in Auto? Trans fluid low?

Btw, I saw the wet weight for an ec 4x4 listed somewhere at 59xx. My truck weighed in at 6000 flat at the dump, empty, with 2 250lb people. Id say 5900-6000lb normal driving conditions for an ec 6ft 4x4.

I would say the data edmunds has is pulled from the manufactureres websites. GM listed the wrong curb weight for the CC last year. GM listed the CC being 4990 lbs for 2010 while the info on the 2011 model lists the curb weight to be 5429 lbs. GM lists the Tahoe weighing in at 5524 lbs. Both the vehicles having LT trim package.

Back on topic, on a 90° day my 6 spd temps are usually around 170° stop and go. Steady highway on the same day, in the 150° range.

My '09 Avalanche 2wd with the 5.3L, 3.08 rear and 6L80E, without the upgraded towing/cooling, always seems to stay in anywhere from the 175-195 range. Never really hits the 190's except for when I was stuck in traffic for extended periods.
