E85 & Synthetic Oil?

Recommended Posts

I have read that if you run E85 that you shouldn't switch to synthetic oil. Any truth to that? Time for an oil change and I'm thinking of switching.

It Should read E85 & synthetic. Couldn't figure out how to change it.

Good info snake doctor.

I never heard synthetics were not to be used with E85. I have been running E85 in my Tahoe intermitantly with Mobil 1 for about 18K miles and my truck now for 8K miles.

So the guy from Royal Purple says that E85 has a higher combustion temperature than regular gas, that's intersesting. I'm glad I'm not using their oil.

The combustion temperature of ethanol is higher than gasoline while the energy content of gasoline will be higher than ethanol.

No, it's quite a bit lower.

Sorry that chart did not paste well. Here is the link:

From the link you provided http://www.webmo.net/curriculum/heat_of_co...ustion_key.html at the very bottom of the page you see this:

"We can see that, in general, the heat of combustion (kJ/g) is greater for the hydrocarbons than for the alcohols. This can be attributed to the fact that the alcohols are already in a partially oxidized state, while the hydrocarbons are not at all oxidized. The densities of the species also play a significant role in determining the heats of combustion in kJ/mL. Since the alcohols are significantly more dense than the hydrocarbons, this slightly increases their "bang" per mL. Ethanol, the most popular additive, has a energy density about 3/4 that of octane."

OK, agent orange is kicking in tonight and I'm a little slow...I don't believe the guy from Royal Purple ment that Ethanol burns hoter than gas.

I'm not into ethanol so I will not research this like I would other subjects, but just thinking, With the higher oxygen content, combined with timing, and the lean burn condition inside the combustion chamber, more heat may be generated than normal. I know I have read of test that stated the catalytic converter running much hotter with ethanol. Any way I believe there is suporting evidence of this. I could be wrong...bit I believe I could be on to something. I'm too tired to look for it tonight.

have a good one...
