Rear Diff

I Pulled out of a street today normal left hand turn. I heard a kind of like a clunk or pop from the rear end. So I pulled over to see what was wrong. Crawled under the truck and I couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. So I continued on. Every time I turned I could hear a clicking type pop sound. Sounded almost like loose lug nuts and the wheel was moving around. Turns out the wheels are tight and it must be coming from the rear end. I decided it was best to stop right there and call AAA before I cause more damage. Dropped it off at my mechanic that does all the hard stuff I dont want to deal with. Anyone have any ideas what I am in for?

 

Its a 2005 crew cab. 5.3, 3.42 gears. 115,000 miles.

If you have a G80 locking diff, they will do that. Probably something broke in it. Or its locking when turning, that will cause it to pop.

I dont think I have a G80. No G80 RPO in the glove box

+1 on the G80 if you have one, back uip a few feet and it should release and quit making noise, but the locking portion will probably not work any more, mine did that when it had 37K miles on it, right after the waranty went out and has been like that every since, it now has 170K.

If no G80 then you may have a more serious issue.

When my old '87 did that, I had toasted the spider gears in the rear-end. Had to put a new carrier in. That's my best guess. Keep us posted, and good luck.

$1100 later and I have a new ring and pinion, and carrier bearing set.
