Duramax

Does anyone have a clue when GM is going to up the power of the Duramax so they don't get left behind the in the diesel race? If so do you know projected HP/Torque. I can't find jack on the internet about new specs on the Duramax. If any.

555lbs./ft. Torque 560lbs./ft. Torque 500lbs./ft. Torque

I'm going to boycott Chevy if they allow themselves to be left in the slow lane by Ford and Dodge, again.

From what I have heard, the 04 model year the Duramax will be getting redesigned cylinder heads (to move the injectors and other fuel system components outside of the head itself to prevent the fuel from leaking into the oil), a variable geometry turbo, and EGR (for all 50 states ). Expect Hp to be in the neighborhood of 340 and torque in the area of 550 ft-lbs depending on what Ford and Dodge have at that time.

btw, I wouldn't expect the 6.0 PSD to stay at its current torque level for very long.....

We're all going to be driving tanks in about 5 years just to handle the 1300 ftlbs of torque and the 800hp....

don't forget, those numbers are only available with a manual trans, you can't get the ford & dodge at those numbers with an auto.....go allison!!!

If anyone wanted a "powerful deisel" Theyd get a H.O Cummins... Nothing beats the torque curve of an Inline 6... Why do you think BMW uses em? Torque curve flatter than Kansas... Plus.. A cummins is a Medium duty deisel whereas the PSD and Duramax are for light duty applications... The same cummins in the Dodge is used in frickin Road graters and alot of Cab-overs... Theyre only detuned (fuel-system wise) to be applied in Dodge trucks... Its very very cheap to Get one running 900 lb ft and 400 ponies... I was able to turn my dads dually, 6 speed H.O cummins sideways in 4th gear after a $700 fuel system mod... On top setting It made more power than the clutch could hold... Dont get me wrong... The duramax is a great engine as is the PSD... But theres a reason that you see Cummins after cummins on the road... Tried and true.. The PSD has gained that status too... Im just sittin back to see how the duramax is gonna prove itself... My grandpa owns one and it has done fine for our purposes so far...

The main reason you see so many Cummins, is because they have been around for 20 years now. (Don`t get me wrong! If they were junk, they would have never lasted 20 years)

Ford sell nearly as many PSD as Dodge sells full size trucks. 200,000 to 235,000 per year on average over the last several years.

And now that GM has a (What seems to be a great) Diesel engine. They are out selling Dodge Diesels. 100,000+ to 85,000. And that number may go up as they increase production of the Duramax engines.

Lets see how GM fairs in 18 more years. They may or may not be right up there with Ford Diesels.

But without a doubt Dodge Cummins is the easiest and cheapest to build up. And so far they can produce the most power. That is one reason they dominate at the truck pulls.

The Duramax is to young to see how the power modes will beat down the engine. Or how far it can be built up. There is more then a few Duramax powered GM trucks running 400+ RWHP and 700+ RW Torque

Thanks for the input on the diesel engine guys. I just couldn't find anything out there myself. And a Cummins is a mean engine I'm not how sure I want to be hooked to one.

I have to agree with Randy. My college instructor( who seems to be very smart after only 2 weeks of school) says the 24 valve Cummins has a horsepower potential of around 700hp and 1100 lb.ft. of torque with Cummins wiring and fuel delivery system. Dodge had to detune the Cummins so they wouldn't tear up trannys and who knows what else.

If Dodge wouldn't have the Cummins in their pickups, they probably wouldn't be selling pickups right now. I know many people that only buy Dodge's because of the Cummins.

ford's new 5-speed auto is sposed to be a lot like the allison, so you will probably be seeing those numbers with an auto...at least in the ford

When the 6.0 PSD is available later in the 03 model year, it will have the same power ratings for both manual and automatic transmissions. I believe that by the 04 model year, the Cummins will have the same power ratings for both transmissions as well. But the Dodge auto will continue to be a 4-spd compared to the other two brands having 5-spds.

Oh, as for what I meant when I said that the 6.0PSD wouldn't stay at its current power level for very long, expect it to have about 600ft-lbs in a year.....
