6l80 Issues Back To Dealer 4 Times!

Hello and thanks for reading and ANY Help. I've had my truck to the dealer 4 times and the same thing each time. They've obviously not totally repaired it and just keep changing things....

It is a 08 H2 with 6L80 6 speed tranny. happened 4 times between 25k miles and 31k miles....

I would be driving and then ALL service lights would illuminate including the service track soon, even the brake light would come on, (every light) the truck would then stick in second gear as the only forward working gear... Park and reverse worked. I would make it home, park the truck and start it next day, it would shift through all gears, but the check engine light would stay illuminated. I would test it before phone call for tow truck. Then I would cross my fingers and drive it to the dealer.

First Visit:They've cleaned the valve body and reset the codes and sent me home.

Second visit: checked some wiring and reparied HVAC wiring and or connector repair according to work order.

Third visit:Fuel pump flow control replacement found codes U0073 and U0109 checked fuel pump control module shorted replaced module, then reprogrammed electronic brake control switch, cleared code and cycled motor....

Fourth visit: The couldnt find anything, even though light was on, they claimed they had to contact GM and GM told them to re-apply grease to the electrical connections, then they replaced my ignition switch just becasue the STEALERSHIP thought it could "POSSIBLY' be an issue.... Order from the service manager.....My work order claims that....ME.... I.... complained my key was sticking and that is why the replaced my ignition switch.... The truck was there an entire week.... Not to mention the section on my work order ""mileage in - mileage out"" was the same and they put 100 mile on my truck testing it. Not worried about the miles as much as their terrible/false documentation....

I feel like they are giving me the run around or purely do not know what they are are doing, just maybe a combonation of the both.... I think they want me to pursue GM and leave them alone, or get a new truck, from them, we talked about it, but I do not want it. Problem, I love my truck..... I've always had GM and never this issue or owned a model with this trans... I traded my beloved TBSS on this thing to make long, cross country trips with my family in and it has become un reliable..... I know there is a fix besides bruning it, so I hope you folks got some good advice, I see it all over this board, just not this exact issue...

PLEASE help if you can and thank you in advance for ANY advice......

Thanks,

Seems to me you need to take it to another dealership. But before that, talk to GM and get it "approved" so you won't have any hassles. Some dealerships don't like cleaning up other peoples messes.

Just FYI: if there is a loose ground it will do things like you describe. I had an aftermarket sidestep on my 99 Sierra, and the lights/speedo would do crazy/random things. The step bar bracket had "worn" on a ground bolt at the frame on the driver's side and loosened it just a bit. That was a frustrating issue to figure out.

Thanks, for the quick reply!!! hopefully I wont have to go this route, the other close to home is about 1.5 hours away... had it at two differnt dealers so far. 1st, 3rd and 4th was in Florida and 2nd time was in Pennsylvania, during one of my road trips with Family.... It was terrible...

But I've been driving it the last couple of days hoping something will happen again. My next road trip will consist of 3k-4k miles and I dont even want to take it.... Its a shame... So I hope I can uncover somehting here or it will break again and hopefully they will find the issue... Who knows, stranger things have happened, maybe all the tinkering theyve done fixed it... But you I am not very confident, they seems to be P'ing in the wind....

Maybe some Chrysler workers got hired by GM and this is the results.

Having a splendid lunch break while working on my truck, who knows...... It was there a week for checking re-greasing the connections and changing the ignition switch last week.... I just would have never imagined this would be the result, I know my truck is a pig, bought it when GM would NOT even offer financing for it cause had to have the latest designed H2, but I knew (or thoguht) I could go anywhere and be safe with family.... NOW I'm seocnd guessing it... It did get through the blizzard last year in Mid Atlantic storms, news was claiming 27 inches of snow and more in some parts, Me and what appeared to be another family in a toyota land cruiser where the only trucks on the highway, it was completely shut down, tractor trialers cars stranded everywhere.... I never had seen anything like it, and now, I'm afraid to drive North all that way again..... due to this problem...., seems to be alot of people on here I would consider genious and have had similar issues.... (Fingers crossed)... Making a point to go drive it today in the dirt and pouring rain, (usually clean in garage unless we NEED to use it (pretty often) I try to take such good care of it, wash, wax, service, keep up on news, re-calls etc.... Go figure, if I beat it it would probably love me better.....

Enjoy the day!

I am going to make a guess and maybe someone can elaborate. But by what you describe, it sounds as if something is losing communication. The TCM is some how losing comunication with the PCM causing it to stick in 2nd gear until the system is rebooted. After all, the powertrain is basically a small network of computers communicating with each other.

It sounds like the dealer is on the right track with checking for faulty connections. Although it is hard for me to believe a trouble code could not get them very close to the source of the problem. Maybe you could do a bit of checking on your own. Unplug every connector you can find, one by one. Check for corrosion or anything that looks out of place. Check the fuse block under the hood and the battery connections. You may have a TCM going bad.

Thanks man, I agree with you, you'd think they would find the codes and be able to narrow it down, atleast after 4 times. I just went out today and drove the wheels off of it, mud, sand, rain, and wet roads... locked in 4 wheel etc. it appears to be shifting softer than prior to last visit... not as hard: during upshift or down shift.... all around smoother... Not slipping though.... However, who knows if it will happen again... Thanks for checking out the thread and for the advice! :D

you have every right to involve the regional or District Service Manager (DSM) and complain, they will have that dealer fix the GD truck, dealers hate when the DSM is involved ,with enough service visits the trucks becomes a POS in GMs eye and shit will happen in your favor.

i know you are upset but i was a tech for along time for GM and these ****ing trucks are a PITA electrically and diagnosing and fixing them under a flawed flat rate system is really difficult ,using the term "stealership" is not right.it rather offensive to us lowly techs( to me anyways )

please take my advise and contact the Zone HQ and talk with the the DSM or what ever the term they use in the states ,he will be very accommodating.

good luck

Thanks, But, agree about the comment pertaining to the Dealership.... "stealership"..... No offense should be taken. I DO give the techs credit that had taken part in the ATTEMPTS to repair my vehicle, INCLUDING the management that I spoke with while there.... I did not just take this up with the Serive guy, I was very professional and respectful and told them I would like to speak with "their manager".... I had freinds that worked at this dealer

Sorry Rob, my response and PC jumped right to the screen! LOL...

I agree AGAIN, however no offense should be taken, as I mentioned, I respect the folks at the dealer and RELY on them... even though my trust has been degraded due to their level of knowledge..... Like you said "I understand your frustration"... It is a PIA and yes, they are an electornic nightmare, or lots of us wouldnt be here, besides: self learning for advancement, mods, pride, etc.... I cannot agreee more and Love that aspect. A lot of folks ask for help like me......

I TRULY APPRECIATE YOUR ADVICE AND WILL TAKE IT SERIOUSLY because I have not been told to contact ANYONE of such. It is late in the eveing here in So Florida, so it WILL be on my list in the am to reach out to this person. I will continue to be professional and respectful...

back to the "stealership" comment. Not to bore you, but I feel I have every right to make that call here.... Not including my frustration, I deliver customer serivce which is very neccesary in my proffesion, and it seems they only started trying late in the game.... THIS is a simple description, I could go on-and-on..... TRUST ME..... You sell someone a new vehilce, you own it as the customer does.... I do not put ALL the blame on the delaership OR TECHS.... (being serious) for the issues, but they MAY have been able to repair this a long time ago..... Instead I feel its been over looked somehow, and SENT me out thinking it was a "glitch".... ME not being a GM Mechanic cannot determine this and is just my opinion regarding my experience....

Thanks Rob, again, your advice is greatly appreciated and VERY helpful.....

Be sure to enjoy your evening!

Rob
