Oil Filter Question

My 2000 K2500 w/ 6L came from the factory w/ a PF59 filter. This filter was approx' the size of a typical pop can (4 1/2" long). Sometime between MY2000 & MY2004, the PF59 was obsoleted by GM & AC Delco. I was able to replace the PF59 w/ a WIX 51522. My 2004 K2500HD came w/ a PF44 installed which has the same thread & gasket diameter as the PF59, but is shorter & about the same size as a "Baby Bud" can (3.4" long). I've been using the 51522 as a replacement filter.

I see that the 2011 6L motors come w/ a PF48 filter. It is approx' the same length as the PF44, but uses a metric thread (M22 x 1.5) & a gasket OD of 2 3/4".

Does anyone know of a oil filter that has a larger capacity (longer) than the PF48?

I hate to say this but I would look at it this way. Your new truck will have a nice big 5yr/100k powertrain warranty attached to it. In my honest opinion, I would run the AC Delco PF-48 until it runs out, because IF for some reason you had an engine issue and it was filtration related (different size, brand, etc.) and they can come to conclusion it was the filter that caused it, then good bye warranty. If I am not mistaken there is a technical service bulletin in relations to wrong sized/poor quality aftermarket filters that do not meet GM standards. If it was designed to run on that filter, then just run it on that sized filter. You aren't doing any harm doing so.

When diagnosing engine noises, check aftermarket oil filter cartridges for oil starvation

Do not perform warranty repairs when the damage was caused by an aftermarket oil filter

the engine was designed to use the stock size filter, if a larger one would show any gains in the benefit department they would have used that instead..bigger isent always better

Thanks guys about the warranty issues. I guess I'll stick w/ the PF46. Even the AC Delco site differs from the owners manual of my '04.

I guess my point was the initial filter that the LS1 motors came w/ was a large filter then it was downsized. Until we see proof of the filter media is improved, it's just conjecture. The longer drain intervals that we now see expose the filters to a lot more impurities. I'll see what the manual says about oil. I know my 2000 & 2004 manual never mentioned using synthetic, just the grade & viscosity.

Back in the 80s the small block Chevy motors in trucks usually came w/ the larger PF35 while my '86 Monte Carlo SS w/ a 305 came w/ the shorter PF25.

You can tell from their replies that "newdude", "elcamino", and "jro909" have been eating TOO MUCH GM-bull_hit. Get a K & N oil filter and you will have the best one. It costs a little more, but it is worth it. The AC-Delco is about the same quality as a Fram.

GM recommends "Mr. Goodwrench" motor oil for all of their vehicles except the Cadillac and Corvette of which they recommend Mobil 1 Synthethic motor oil. Bad thing is that GM doesn't own an oil refinery and they won't say who they get it from. Why shouldn't Mobil 1 synthetic be recommended for all of GM's vehicles, except diesels.

Just my take.

This is what is listed on the AMSOIL product application guide for you new 2011 truck.

I highlighted in red the oil filters recommended.

Also remember that GM states that only oil meeting dexos1 specification to be used.

Must one assume that the sorry AC-Delco PF-48 oil filter comes under the specification for the EAO50--Absolute Efficiency Oil Filter. If the AC-Delco oil filter meets the specification, then the Mobil 1 oil filter and the K & N oil filter, as well as, many other 3rd-party oil filters meets that specification also. Just because GM sells it, doesn't mean it is TOP QUALITY. In fact, they don't even make their oil filter, they contract it out.

Here in Northern Virginia, there is a lot of turnover in mechanics at GM dealers. Once they learn the works, they leave the dealer for GREENER pastures and a larger percentage of their labor charge. The dealers here employ a lot of Hispanics, of which there is a high percentage of illegals. They are GOOD employees. They will do anything the boss tells them to do. I wouldn't trust a Northern Virginia GM dealers opinion without getting a second opinion from an independent mechanic.

Champion Labs makes AC Delco filters. They also make Mobil 1 and K&N filters. I believe Exxon/Mobil makes GM Goodwrench oil.

And..GM approves a wide range of oil brands and manufacturers for their cars and trucks..

PF46 is the correct filter for the 5.3/6 litre through 2006. In 2007 GM went to the PF48. It has metric threads and will not interchange with the PF46 or fit the 2006 and earlier engines.

It was a typo on my part. I meant PF48, but typed PF46.

As for the size I would go with whatever they're reccomending. As for the brand AcDelco is going to be an ok filter. However it is untrue that they will void or not honor your warranty for an aftermarket filter on there. I would stay away from Fram as they are complete JUNK, my filter of choice is a Wix or NAPA gold (Same Filter)

I've been using Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 for years. GF-5 compliant.

I'm here to tell you that they (GM Dealership) do, in fact, refuse to honor the warranty for an aftermarket filter that causes engine problems. I have my 2007 Saturn Outlook in the shop now with a knocking engine, thank you Goodyear for the faulty oil filter. Now I will have to eat the cost of the engine replacement, and still have 15,000 miles left on the warranty.
